So these are the cards that can be overclocked i.e. flash bios?? Is that what you are saying.

Also would some of you guys also post some serial numbers on the cards that can be overclocked, also some identification areas on the cards, this would help us newbies out.

No, I am not saying that. I am saying some makers of the card have made *cheaper* versions (the 128bit bus) and I think you can't make those into a 256bit product.

You can o/c them though, how much is a gamble.

for the purposes of this thread, newbies should stay away from the SE 128bit models. they are little better than 9600's. apparently, some can be hacked to become regular 9800 models with a full 256bit memory bus, but personally, i'd stay away from them. stock, they pretty much suck.

based upon reading numerous threads here and on Rage3d, the best 9800's to get are the Samsung 3.3/2.8ns non-Pro versions. most of these seem to be able to hit Pro speeds without much trouble. the Infineon 3.0ns versions don't seem to do so well in hitting Pro RAM speeds. unfortunately, the Infineon ones seem to be most common nowadays (i just bought 2 from my local BestBuy yesterday).

Im gouing to hold off on buying anything until this SE thing pans out.

Honestly, im not sure why everyone hates on the SE so much as it is. It's better than a 9600 pro, and it barely costs anymore. I think a 9800 SE is a better choice than a 9600 pro

I got one from BB, don't know how to read the speed of the chips, but it's samsung and I've got it clocked at 400 core 355 mem, anything higher than that on the mem and I get artifacts in 3dmark03, I'm still pushing the core to see how high it will go.

Yeah, thats kind of silly though because once you pay shipping there is almost no difference than paying tax

plus at BB you get it RETAIL with a full 3 year warranty and you get the pleasure of having it immediatley

Thanks for the tip. I have been considering the 9600Pro and decided to splurge on the 9800. It has 3-ns Infineon RAM. I have not tried overclocking - don't know how yet.

The inventory system at the stores are not accurate. I traveled to a couple stores that showed inventory but didn't really have any. One BB also listed an in-store clearance price of $129 for the 9500pro but no Atlanta stores showed stock of course.

Well just picked up a 9800NP over at Best Buy..$250.00 Has Infineon 3.0ns chips on it so perhaps I won't be able to stretch it to 'Pro' speeds. Oh well, I was going to go with a 9600Pro, but this seemed like a better deal. Besides, going from a GeForce 2 card I think I'll be more than happy

Going to pick up another one tomorrow for the brother, maybe I'll get lucky and get one w/ Samsung chips? Ahh, fat chance. I'll post back with overclocking results on this thread when I get around to it for anyone who cares.

i care. besides, i am curious as to how well you'll do with Infineons. i had 2 cards and didn't even take them out of their static bags cause i felt it wouldn't be worth the trouble to overclock 'em. i returned them yesterday... sigh... (must wait for HL2 bundle cause don't need better video card now)

I got infineon, how hard is it to return for another one at BB?
I wish there was a way to see what kind of ram it has by the upc or outside of the box.....

Umm no the shipping is 6 dollars. Sales tax on a 250 dollar purchase is a whole lot more. And you do get a 3 year warranty with the purchase. Check ATIs website they have a warranty policy for the original user, says nothing about oem or retail.

I had no problems returning the Radeon 9800NP with Infineon memory to Best Buy. I ordered on the web and returned saying that I was getting checkerboarding artifacts whenever I played a game too long (just in case they decide to test it). My original order from BestBuy.com was eligible for the $25 gift cert, but the exchange messed that up (they entered the exchange as a return and then a new order).

Anyway, I tried 3 times and was 0-3. Infineon every darn time. 2 cards from different stores on Long Island and then 1 card from New Jersey. I ended up giving up and ordering Sapphire OEM Radeon 9800 PRO at New Egg for $306. With the darn 8.5% NY sales tax, this ended up only about $30 more. No fancy box, but it came with CD, DVI adapter and some other cables.

Well, if you get 3 years whether or not it is OEM or retail, thats a pretty good deal

However for the small price difference it may still be worth it to have it immediatley, as well as have a local store to return it to without an problems

I don't mind shopping online, but I have learned from experience that if the cost of having to RMA it once makes up the price difference or almost does, it isnt worth buying online IMHO

What the crap!
The new infineon card got me 6000 on 3dmark03. A 500+ improvement without even overclocking....

What's your setup on which your running that 9800 on?

The 9800NP I just got at the local Best Buy has Infineon chips (3ns) and I'm currently running it at 352 core / 315 mem. Everything seems fine now, no artifacts.
