Yup! Now $239.99 on the BB website "Taking orders." I bought one at the B&M last week for $249.99, went back today and got a $10 credit. Interesting that the store had 1 on the shelf marked at $299.99; same as when I bought mine, but it scanned at $249.99 at that time.

Just wondering, if you order the card online, could you return it in a local store?

Yes you can, just bring in your receipt. However, if you ordered with the $25 digital coupon, you will lose it since they will essentially return the card and resell it at the new price.

The 2 cables and 2 small hardware were still in their bags. The 4 wire power cable was attached to the card but the rest of that cable looked well tucked inside it's long bubble wrap.
I'm afraid someone flashed the card and didn't like the results. It would've been hard to put the power cable back in it's bubble wrap but they could've just used a different cable. The memory is <STRONG>Samsung</STRONG> GC2A.
This was an AnandTech influenced impluse buy. I could've waited for my $60 Reward Zone money to arrive. I think it was the last one. If I return it and buy another at a different store, I think I'll open it at the store right after I pay for it. Any suggestion on whether to keep or return it it?

Today, Tuesday exchanged it for another card at another BB. Checked contents and everything ok. It has <STRONG>Samsung</STRONG> GC33 chips. (First store offered <STRONG>10%</STRONG> off but I said no.) FYI, some stores don't display high end electronic on the shelfs along with the regular stuff, so it looks like they are sold out. You have to ask for it. BTW ,there are 3 (2 of which are open box) 9800 non pro at the Lakewood, CA store.

i don't know if you knew this or not but gc2a chips are faster than the gc33. gc2a run at 350mhz and gc33 at 300. check this link

Yes, thank you for that information. I knew that and had also visited the Samsung site for that information, but I had zero interest in owning an open box product, particularly one such as video card with exposed electronics that could have been damaged without becoming readily evident or fail months later.

I'd like to note that you were the only person to notice and write that I had that much sought after faster memory and gave it back. I had mentioned the exact store in case someone wanted it. Now back to Best Buy for a $10 credit for the current price difference!

For the new 9800 NPs w/Samsung, what's your serial number? (or rather, the first 6 digits?)

I've noticed that reports of older serials, starting with 180314, were Samsung. I can personally report that of a couple that I've looked at starting with 180324 and 180322 were Infineon.

Interesting observation. The 1st six on mine are: 180321, which has Infineon 3.0ns (333mhz rated).

S/N: 180314 for the Samsung GC33 chips. Of course I didn't keep the S/N record of the faster chips GC2A on the video card that I returned. Got my $10 for the price drop and picked up the last Audigy 2 card at the Westminter, CA for $55 -- not bad considering it has 2 full version games. A clearance price and not 'featured' listed on CL's site.

I think I have something that debunks your theory. 180322 here, and Samsung GC2A memory.

I got 180321 with the samsung 3.3's. I'm running 450/370 without a hitch. Score 6200+ on 3dmark03. Oh, and did I mention this was an open box for $202 OUT THE DOOR!!!! ($184 + 8.25% tax)

hate to say it, but . . .

WOOT!!!!!

Hmm. Well, it was worth a shot.

The assumptions here of course are:

a) batches of cards will have serial numbers in the same range.
b) batches of cards are all made with the `same' ram.

Maybe only six digits isn't enough. For mine: 180324 039: Infineon. Can't remeber what the others were.

Well I broke down and ordered one from BB.com. I figured that they might have some new models with Samsung RAM. I immediately received an OOS email. Said they should receive some by 10/14. I doubt that they will. I have seen a few left in the B&M's near me but they look like they're older stock. Might get one anyway.

Samsung GC2A: 180322 038

I went to my local Best Buy tonight, and decided to take a chance based on the above, so I bought a 9800 s/n 180322 038xxx-01 (thinking I might get the Samsung GC2A like CheetahMk2 -- guess what? I DID!!! Thanks for posting the s/n info. Here's the second confirmed GC2A from that s/n range.

p.s. - Got the Best Buy preferred customer 10% off coupons in the mail today. Plan to take the receipt to the store on Friday and have them knock another 10% off (basically, will return the card and then immediately re-buy at the lower price since the 10% off can not be used on prior purchase). Makes the card $215.99+tax - reward zone points

p.p.s. - The shelf tag indicated the $239 price was in effect until 10/31/03.

This deal is getting better and better. I'am going to start checking the returns shelf at BB, hoping to grab one of those $200 deals.

Huh, how did you get it to $215? The 10% off, right? Is there any way to get the 10% coupon now? I paid full retail+tax ^^;

I haven't gotten it to $215 yet. I paid $239.99+tax today. I got the 10% off coupon in the mail today. The coupon is valid starting Friday. On Friday, I will go back to my local Best Buy with the receipt, and "return" the card, and immediately re-purchase it using the coupon. This will make it $215.99+tax.

As long as one is within the original purchase return period, Best Buy will allow this. As for getting the coupon, if you don't usually get these in the mail from Best Buy, someone usually ends up posting a link to printable versions.

Also, if you are not yet a reward zone member, this purchase would allow you to join and immediately break even. You'd have enough points from signing up + buying the card for $10 in reward certificates, and the membership costs $9.99 for the year I believe.

Eh.. I'd rather not trudge all the way there again for that. Maybe if I can get a 10% off coupon, but otherwise I think I'm good.

South Austin had two left on the shelf and I picked up one of them. Mine has Infineon chips and the numbers on both boxes were identical. Oh well, at $239 + tax it's still a good deal for a retail box, especially since these are becoming harder to find. From everything I've seen online, it will do 380/320 and that's close enough to the Pro for me. They had a shelf tag for the 9700 Pro clearance priced at $199, but of course no stock. I'm bummed that I missed out on that one!

What's the first part of the serial number? It's on the top edge of the box.

Local BB has 2 cards, 180320 which is Infineon according to post above.

The other card is 160322 . Yes its 6, not 8 I looked very carefully.

Anyone has an idea what it might be ?

EDIT 160322 has Infineon 3.0 , oh well...

Looks like BB pulled this from there website. Great deal for the people that got in on it! My card had the Infineon 3.0 and looks like maybe no more stock will ship to the stores so I will just keep it. Thanks for the post.
