Where did you by it from? I eagerly wait your results. It would be helpful to benchmark it before and after the attempt.

Darkmask, I like your italics quote. Anyway, do please post some info on your mod. I'm about to pick one of those cards up. I still have the ole' GF 4400@4600 and with HL2 coming soon I want something that game won't spank. Plus I want to get my hopes up about performance. I'm assuming there are not details as to which manufacture's are producing cards that will mod for sure. Are there any ideas on which cards will? If anyone has any clue please fill all of us in.

I think we are all pretty anxious to get more info about these.

It looks like all the major hardware sites are completley ignoring this card, which is pretty annoying IMHO.

You can get these for like 180$ which is barely more than a 9600 pro. So I dont know why people even bother with 9600 pros. you might as well get a 9800 SE.

If the 9800 SE can be modded to 9800 pro, it will be about the haootest deal in video cards ever

Please post the results. Also, if you could let us know what brand of card you have and whether or not you started with the 128 or 256-bit memory interface... I know we'd all appreciate it.

so will the hack changes the 128 bit part to a 256 bit? This could be the best bang for buck in the history of v-cards.

I just ordered Powercolor's version of the 9800SE and should have it in a week. I'll try the mod and post results when I'm through. If anyone else has any more info or tries the mod, please post results here. Thanks!

ok i tired modding my SAPPHIRE 9800se and so far it doesnt appear to work.... i am heavily dissapointed as i originally thought that "SE" would mean something better. Even after all these years, im still able to fall victim to stupid little pr stunts.

I feel for you Know exactly what you mean. I was considering a SE edition also thinking Special Edition meant something Special. In other words to me it meant a better card than the 9800np and also pro maybe. I then noticed the price, said oh no, it's screw the customer time.
What kills me is that the company's can keep doing this crap, yet when someone figure's a legit way to enhance the product they bought , the company's don't like it. They try to do everything to keep you back.
I have to ask how much greater is the profit margin when compared to the np, also is it the way to discontinue the np and sell this piece of crap ( which it is considering the money their asking for compared to a legit np )

It does nothing with the memory path. When you buy the card it will either have a 256 bit or 128 bit path, and that cannot be changed. The mod attempts to open up the other 4 pipelines.

Sorry to hear the mod didn't work for you Darkmast. But really, I'm not that surprised it didn't. I don't think ati would make the same mistake twice, allowing people to get a high performance card for very cheap. Btw, what ram did your card come with Dark?

I've been reading about this at Rage3D. You have to be sure to get a 256 bit card. Not all of them are 256 bit. I just checked Omega's site and he has this mod built into his drivers. Riva Tuner will do it too. I'm tempted to try this out as I've been very happy with my softmodded 9500np.

if you look through pricewatch, there are lots of sites that are selling 256bit cards
that doesn't mean you will get a 256 card though...

The obvious, get the model number of the card and look up the specs on the manufacturers site.
If you shop at Newegg, just use the "Product Link".

alright i would just like to update everyone on my continuing saga with this ati card. while i initially rushed it and thought it didnt work (using the driver mods on that ocfaq site), once i UNINSTALLED and then reinstalled the drivers using the riva tuner mod, i got it to work.

However, i get massive "checkerboard" problems with it, even tho i feel its just becoz it has the lower quality r9700 pro cooler on it.

i figure it must be becoz when the 4 extra pipelines get enabled (which they are now) the gpu does ALOT more work.

sadly, it says the memory is only 128 bit. i can live with that tho if i can just get this artifacting nonsense gone.

thnx dudes.

if u look further up, i didnt realize that the 9800se performs worse than a 9800np. Well, since rma sucks and I have had an inclination to get screwed over alot lately, i decided to keep it and try the soft-mod. Right now im thinking, better cooling, maybe a 9800 bios and i will get the trick done. who knows?

oh and btw, the memory is only infineon 3.3ns, so my memory ocs get screwed too.

oh well

I would send it back. the results are looking pretty dismal at this point

I suppose it's always possible that you could need better cooling, but I tend to doubt it. With the 9500np softmod, defective pipes would cause checkerboarding. To try to eliminate this checkerboarding people have tried various things, but to no avail. With the 9500 it appears that there is no cure for checkerboading when the mod is applied, and I would have to assume that the same holds true for the 9800se.

It seems that it is sold all over the world. And its far more expensive here. If it were 100$ it would be a decent card

Evidently you need to get one with the red pcb that is laid out exactly the same as the 9700 Pro with two memory chips along the top of the card and two along the side. Most Sapphires don't fit the bill as they come on a black pcb with all four memory chips lined up at the top of the card. Here's hoping my Powercolor model will be able to mod when I receive it next week, but I'm truly skeptical at this point.

I've been looking into this 9800se softmod issue and you need a 256 bit card for it. BananaPC has one for $180., stock clocks of 380/337.

ATi has been making the 9800 for about 5 months now but they only recently started selling the 9800 se. That means that ATi must have a stockpile of 9800se's with dead pipelines or that can't run at full 9800 pro speeds. This stockpile should be depleted in only a few months as ATi sells these SE cards into the channel and into OEM markets. After that, there might be a chance that some r360 cores capable of being a 9800pro will be remarked as 9800se's to meet market demand for the 9800se if there is any. So you might want to wait a bit to buy the 9800se.
