Then why are 7850s clocking 200-300Mhz less than 7870s?

Core binning and core voltage. The 7850s are set at a lower core voltage, once you raise it to 7870 levels (if the power circuitry supports this) you find they will likely only fall a little behind.

I was really hoping for a kepler paper launch before comitting, but I'm definitely ordering a 7870 in the next day.

Why? it's overpriced by $100. Has about same performance as GTX 570 which you can get right now for $250 or $110 less.

I'd pay $50- extra for better noise levels, OCing ability and power consumption so that still puts it $60 too high.

Any opinions on MSI Twin Frozr vs Sapphire for the 7850?
My take is MSI might have better cooling but at expense of being a bit louder?

Appreciate any advice as I think I'll be picking from these two soon.

In part because I wouldn't be terribly comfortable running a 570 on my 450w power supply. So I'd have to buy a new one, bringing up the price.
Also because the game I'm playing most currently, The Old Republic seems to sing on these cards compared to the Gtx500 series.

From all the research I've done it seems like the new Sapphire cooler is the best option with the Twin Frozr 3 a close second. I wonder how soon MSI will be releasing the Twin Frozr 4 ards they displayed at CeBit.

-On the contrary, many of the vendor cards are have a decent 10% OC on them, which actually has the 7870 trading blows with the GTX580 and even the 7950 in many scenarios (see the recent Anand review of the PCS+ and Saphire variants). Its more or less a $350 GTX580, and an absurdly good deal for anyone looking for that kind of performance.

I agree that everything would be much more wonderful if we could pay less for it, but for someone looking for that kind of performance its a steal.

I on the other hand, will continue to wait for double my GTX460's performance at the $200 price point.

Turning out to be great value. In the AT review it's twice as fast as a 560 at times and beating the 580 more than not for $100 less. Making the 7950 look really bad. Looks like at crap ton of the shaders on the 7970 are being wasted as the front end can't feed them fast enough.

I think this will be next card unless the midrange stuff from nV comes out sooner.

I'm seriously considering it....my 5850 is almost 2 years old.
