as I mentioned I have the Thor v2 case. first of all its massive in size so that helps, but it has 4 fans

front 230mm intake
side 230mm intake
rear 140mm exhaust
top 230mm exhaust

it failed 2 hour occt burn in test overnight....no idea when or how as the screen was simply frozen when I woke up.

it plays bf3 fine though with vrm temps maxing at 75c and gpu still under 70after 2 hours Posted from Anandtech.com App for Android

Looks like I'll be buying a new case . Try bumping up the voltage again tonight and see if it'll pass the burn test.

review for my case
I made a typo the top is also 230mm....
I knew i was going to OC so cooling and room was the biggest factor when I built my comp....this case fit both needs and looks good as well in my opinion.

size did not matter this thing is a tank don't get it if you can't handle a massive tower and yeah I was planning on that.

I'd like to have fan speed lower than that 60% after i listened to it howl from my bed all night so I have some playing to do anyways.

91C vrms on 1210/1750 1.175V 56% fan

56/58/60% fan speeds seem to double the loudness of the fan step by step....56 makes it inaudible over my case fans.....58 makes it about even but a different pitch, and 60 is just too loud.

gunna see what 1210/1750 1.170V 58% does. i dont want to hit 90 vrm temps.

We have another member who cracked 1200mhz and 10000 GPU score in 3dMark11 on the MSI TF3 7950? Congrats. These cards are mad overclockers in the right hands

What drivers are you all using? I know the 12.9 beta is out right now. I just want to make sure I have the correct procedures as I wait for my new card to arrive next week.

1210/1750 1.170V 58% fan runs at 87C VRM temps and 75C GPU after 2 hr of OTTC. not bad for a 86% ASIC GPU

these are the 12.9 beta drivers

also this is the first gpu ive ever OC'd....like everything else its not that hard to figure out with some research. figure out what not to do then tinker with the rest

Are the 12.9 good for you? I previously had an HIS 7970 with the 12.8 drivers and they seemed fine too. Just worried since I've always had nvidia drivers and I always just updated them, installed and didn't think about issues. Its just that with Amd I've been reading about some quirks and didn't want to miss any steps.

As for the OC'ing the new card I will be getting will be my first overclocked card so I'll make sure to read instructions on how to go about it.

12.8

12.9

+runs bf3 faster

cant speak for anything else

as far as oc'ing goes

rule #1 dont over volt it. period. 1.175 is "stock" volts for the 7970 pcb on a reference card. i set that as my max goal. you can go a bit higher --1.25-- but really no need IMO. especially since these cards OC past 1000mHz on stock (<1.1V) voltages. IIRC zaydq ran 1000+ with under 1V.

i guess step #2 find a fan speed you are comfortable dealing with

then start upping core clocks. what i did was up the clocks by 25 until it crashed. then back it up by 5 until its stable. do a quick burn in test and make sure temps are ok. I use OCCT for burn in. it generates higher temps than furmark. I bench in heaven to make sure it doesnt artifact (unfortunately you have to sit and watch it cycle). also bench in 3dmark to make sure it doesnt crash.

then do the same thing with the memory clocks. I bench in heaven to make sure it doesnt artifact (unfortunately you have to sit and watch it cycle). also bench in 3dmark to make sure it doesnt crash. burn in with OCCT for max temps.

cliffs:
-set voltage to 1.175V
-set decent fan speed. make sure it doesnt drive you nuts.
-move core clocks up 25 til crash, then down 5 til stable
-move mem clocks up 50 til crash, down 25 til stable\
-lower voltage by 0.01 til crash, them move up 0.005 til stable

after every single adjustment test:
-unigine heaven for artifacts. set all settings to max
-3dmark11 for crash. set to stretched.
-OCCT for burn in/temp testing. max all settings.
-monitor temps and voltages with HWinfo64

if any test fails back it up a bit. If you have a setup that works make sure to actually test it real world in game. It should be fine as the other tests stress it far beyond a game will but theres always the chance of something not meshing correctly.

personally im comfortable with <80 core temp and <90 VRM. I did no testing above 1.2V. My fan is kinda loud but I run my stock 3x 230mm + 1x140mm case fans at 100% plus I have my Noctua D14 CPU cooler buzzin away in there. My rig sounds very much like a window fan set on low.

Personally I like that sound as I sleep with a fan on, so this does not bother me. I set my GPU fan to have a noise level equal to the case and went tinkering from there. Then I went crazy trying to break 10K 3dmarks, but thats not necessary.

also i had to back my cpu OC down a bit as it didnt sit kosher with me OCing the GPU and kept crashing everything. i ended up taking her down 1.0 BLCK and 1 core multiplier (down ~.1gHz) and then had better GPU OC results.

Your case makes such a huge difference in temperatures. At those clocks with that voltage my card is running in the 85-89*C range. I'm definitely going to look into a new case!

I got my 10k gpu score with 12.8, i should try it with 12.9 and see what it changes.

wow gore... GREAT POST. that's about as detailed as you can get for the oc'ing process. great instructions.

someone should edit that and put some links to all the software and sticky it somewhere

I'll definitely edit the main post to reflect OC'ing software, monitoring programs, Heaven/3dmark11 benchmark download links and take Gore's OC'ing advice, with his permission ofcourse, and essentially have a mini OC guide reflecting these MSI TF3 7950s.

EDIT: I've got a little guide started but I have to stray from the computer for a little bit. If any of you have time to do a quick read and let me know if I missed anything or I am not clear I'd be very grateful.

I use sapphire trixx to Oc....I couldn't get afterburner to allow me to alter voltages using several different guides. after more reading I think it was the version I was using.

and of course you can use my advice.

I do not claim to be an overclocking professional as this is my first gpu oc.

most of that is simply what I gathered during my research plus a bit of my own insight during the actual process with this card.

I too am completely unable to get MSI afterburner to unlock voltage control, or go past CCC clock limits. It doesn't matter what guide I follow it will not work. May have to try out Trixx.

If altering the MSIAfterburner.cfg config file with Notepad doesn't work, do this:

1) Download Asus GPU Tweak:
http://event.asus.com/vga/2012/gpu_tweak/#/downloads

2) Open it and go to Settings --> Tuning --> Tune Settings, under here check mark: "Overclocking range enhancement", press Apply. The screen should flash once or twice. Close the application.

3) Open MSI AB, go to Settings --> General --> Check mark "Unlock voltage control" and "unlock voltage monitoring".

Restart the computer and your MSI AB should have GPU clocks to 1665mhz and memory to 2475mhz and full voltage control.

Sapphire Trixx on my card gives 1300mhz GPU speed but no voltage control without dropping 2 lines into the MSI AB .cfg file using Notepad.

Just to add some visual to what Russian is saying.

EDIT: I updated the first post with a download link to Sapphire Trixx as an alternative.

nice guide so far

maybe add a link for hwinfo64 for monitoring

and OCCT for temp stresses

After you install afterburner, you can copy this below in the CFG file located in the root folder.

UnofficialOverclockingEULA = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
UnofficialOverclockingMode = 1

If you see zeros for core and memory and you cannot adjust and save the two you need to download this file below (Just do a google search)

Atipdlxx.dll and put it in \Windows\SysWOW64\ (or \Windows\System32\)

Enable voltage control as shown in the above posts and you are good to go.

Come on guys you own MSI cards, use afterburner. TRIXX is for kids......

seeing as I run 1210/1750 100% stable with sub 70c core and sub 80c vrm I feel no need to mess with anything like switching OC programs.

I did all that cfg editing mentioned in several threads and none of it worked, so I dl trixx and without doing anything besides installing the program voltage adjustment was fully unlocked.

I like simple. that was definitely simple. nothing wrong with that.

Just busting your balls!! I tried TRIXX, it's not bad at all. I just like the interface of Afterburrner a little better - Great clocks BTW.
