Hey guys, I dunno if this is well known or not, but it's annoyed me since getting my 7950...

Using MSI I can only overclock with forced constant voltage, however when it downclocks it's downclocking only, it's not undervolting.

are you using AB version 3.0.0 beta9 ?

that version allows me to change voltage properly on my msi 7950 boost edition

Yeah actually "I discovered" it was working with that beta.. And here I thought I found a work around... Needless to say I felt kind of sheepish after that "discovery" :'(

Really lame that all the manufacturers bolted down on the voltage control. The true beauty to the 7950 is the price/performance... and the insanity of overclocking it.

I just got home and pressed the boost button my card that I didnt know was there.

Ooo look at the pretty light. And now I reset my computer, looks like it installed a different driver.

I dont know how they can not mention this boost button at all in the package.

it's funny, this boost bios switch totally fixed my problems, and could have saved me about 12 hours of benchmarking and pulling my hair out.

they need better copy writers over there at Sapphire.

I just got these HIS 7950s a couple of weeks ago and they are not volt locked. Neither are the MSI ones, even the more recent cards I think. Just have to do a bit of digging to find out which ones are not locked.

I was just speaking to the 7870
You only have to search google and forum threads the last few months to see people getting locked gigabyte cards ...

Are you saying the 7950 rev 1 gigabytes aren't locked, but the rev 2 are ?
It should come down to the bios version on the card more than the revision of the board as to which/any voltages can be changed.

what about the new gigabyte 7970 are they locked (cause they are really cheap) ?

also the oc vs. non-oc versions, difference there ?
I'm not interested in 7970, but i can confirm that rev.1 7950 are not hardware voltage locked. Some of them come with locked voltage bioses, but they can be reflashed... 7950 GB rev. 2 for now are hardware voltage locked. About 7970s - all i know that most of them are voltage locked irrespective of the kind - oc or not.

You guys using side mounted case fans with your 7950's? If so are you using them as intake or exhaust?

Two 120mm case fans on the front of the case, 160mm on the top of the case, and a 120mm at the top rear of the case, which the CPU heatsink blows into.

My card runs very cool.

Im having coolies issues with my 7950. One 120mm fan in the front and one in the back. I think my issue may more so be the shitty TIM on my tf3

How hot? What version of the TF3 is it?

Its a tf3 on a 6+8 pin 7970 pcb. Don't know the exact model number. When running 1200 on the core and 1.168v. It hits 83-85 degrees and locks up/ this is with a 70% fan setting. Right now im running 1100 on the core at 1.04v and with the fan at 49% and it runs extremely cool, topping out at 60 degrees.
