Is there anyone who knows which gigabyte 7950's are voltage locked?
These gigabyte models are really cheap where I live so I am probably gonna buy a second one for mining.
I can choose between a 900mhz one and a 1000mhz one. The 1000mhz one is locked right?
Also I have heard you need to flash to another bios on some of these cards to get the most out of them. I have no idea how that is done and it would be much appreciated if you guys could point me in the right direction
getting stuttering in Far Cry 3 and Left 4 Dead 2, doesn't matter settings. They run smooth but there is a slight hitch in the frames at certain points, like when i turn corners, or look at fire in L4D2. Not sure why, my system should be eating L4D2 for breakfast. Wondering if I need to do a driver reinstall
i5 2500k @ 4.0ghz
Sapphire 7950 @ stock 925/1250
8gb g.skill ddr3-1600
WD Black 500gb 7200 rpm hd
Rosewill Capstone 650 watt psu
Hey guys, I dunno if this is well known or not, but it's annoyed me since getting my 7950...
Using MSI I can only overclock with forced constant voltage, however when it downclocks it's downclocking only, it's not undervolting.
If I don't force voltage than I'm stuck at 1.25v, however if I force my voltage that I want, then turn it off and reboot it will actually boot in with that as the default vid.
I don't know if it keeps it through multiple reboots or not, I haven't got that far. However it does drop to 800mv with the ultra low clocks as well now and I got my voltage set for 1050MHz and it's working right - ie not at 1250mv :\
my locked gigabyte 7870 is revision 1.0
I don't think you can tell by revision which ones are locked.
It's safer to just avoid gigabyte if you want an unlocked card IMO.
Did a quick search and was left empty handed so I thought I'd ask here.
If I bump the memory clock even 1Mhz above stock the idle voltage doesn't return back to... well... idle.
It's idling at .94@500 and if I set trixx to 1100/1250@1.1V the voltage jumps back down to .94 perfectly fine when idling.
Anything above 1250 on the memory and it stays at 1.1V.
The card runs perfectly at 1600 on the memory otherwise.
I know there's little gain with higher memory clocks but still.
Switching profiles is bothersome to say the least and idle voltage drops the heat/consumption considerably.
MSI 7950 TF3 BE OC, latest bios, latest catalyst beta, trixx 4.6, win 8 x64.
Thanks guys!
If you have multiple monitors, remember that it prevents the memory from downclocking at idle which will cause warm idle temps. The TF3 7950 that I just bought is roughly the same temp at idle (of course my computer is in a super warm room) but then so was my Windforce 6850 because it ran multiple monitors as well. Though my load temps aren't as high as yours...
Hey, long time lurker, first time poster. (That's way overused) (For proof, I've read all 55 pages of this thread, I have too much spare time.)
I will be getting a hd 7950 as an upgrade from a failing hd 7770. Would you say vapor x or what?
Sorry about the short post, it was done from my phone.Sapphire 3L model has had favorable reviews. I know this thread started off with being all about the Msi 7950's but it seems like the gigabytes and sapphires with voltage unlocked are the ones to go for now in terms of price and overclocking ability. I cannot attest to the new msi tf3s as i believe they dont make the model im using any longer; and no ones buying them either.
And wow at reading the whole thread. I started it off and was active a while, then went on a hiatus, when i came back it blew up in page count and i've yet to read a ton of it. Lots of good tidbits throughout, as im sure you noticed.

I'm looking at either the TF3, the WF3 or the 3L. (All 3's, weird.) If I can find a 7970 PCB TF3 I think I'll get that. A vapor-x or something sounds ok, but the old TF3 seems to the be the best overclocker. But I only have a 550w PSU. With my hd 7770 OC'ed to 1200/1300 I get 26 fps with minecraft shaders, one of the more demanding games I know of. :|
Specs: i7 870, hd 7770 (dying), random 1.5 TB hdd, 550w hive PSU, 8 GB of 1333 RAM. 1280x1024 monitor.
Yeah, it took me three days of reading, solid. I'm bored.
Did you guys know the sapphire cards have an actual boost button your supposed to press? Sapphire just inforned me..
Hey guys, can you post your Unigine 4 scores?
Preset: Custom
1920 x 1080
Fullscreen
8x AA
Quality: Ultra
Tessellation: Extreme
Here are my results:
FPS: 29.4
Score: 742
Min FPS: 16.5
Max FPS: 63.1
My card is @ stock boost 925/1250.
I told you about this switch (see link below post #21) when you were having your problems with throttling in the link below. This is a dual bios card and doesn't change the boost aleast not with mine and we both have 3L's it stays at 925/1250. I believe it is just a dual bios card per switch meaning you have two bios if one gets corrupted for one reason or another per update you have a backup. The only thing I seen it change if I remember correctly awhile back was the voltage from 1.16 - 2.50 and I think the 2.50 one is suppose to have a more aggressive fan profile. Mine does not change the boost the clock settings either when trying it while the computer is on or switching it when the computer is off and booting up.
Does your change the clock settings when you change the switch position?

Here is mine: MSI R7950 TF3 @ 950/1250
Resolution: 1920x1080
Quality: Ultra
Tessellation: Extreme
Anti-aliasing: x8
Ill have to check when im off work.
You werent having any issues with your overclock were you?
My Vapor-X is not so bad either in that aspect. Bios#1 has stock settings 850/1250 MHz @ 1.006 V, and bios#2 is 950/1250 MHz @ 1.087 V, but I am using bios#1 since the voltage control is better. I can do 1175/1450 MHz @ 1.087 V and 1200 @ 1.15 V, probably more, but I do not need more than that. The TF3 might beat that, but it is noisier. I think ASUS makes the best 7950, but you will likely pay 7970 prices for an ASUS HD7950, at least where I live. YMMV and all that.Hey Bud, welcome to the forums!
If you care mostly about overclocking, then I would vote the MSI TF3. Even the new ones (V1) Have been overclocking very well. Tattooed Sailor and Balla have had some good overclocks and the voltage is completely adjustable. I doubt you will find a 7970 PCB new one, but you could always find one used? 550W should be fine with your setup. But I do think a 7950 is a bit of overkill for a 1280X1024 monitor...

you are absolutely not right about gb 7950. I can tell wich are hardware locked and wich are software voltage locked because i am intersted about this and i made some researches in the net for 4 or 5 months. I posted about it.
