A third of a 3850, at half the price. Definitely looks promising. Once these (or the X2900XT) hit sub $70 AR I may pick one up for the old HTPC. For an entry level card 512 megs doesn't make a huge difference over 256, and can be viewed as mostly marketing.

The 3400 board is also up for $49 + $5 ship. Not a bad option if your on-board video no longer works.

I was hoping for $70.00 price range on that too and instead went with a Radeon HD2600 Pro for my HTPC. Ordered it today and it cost $58.00 after rebate. A 3400 would cost $55.00 but the 2600 performance is about 3 times that of the 24XX and 34xx and for $3.00 more.

I figure in a year I will want to upgrade my HD3870 so that when that happens I will move the 3870 to the HTPC.

Wait until the next gen ATi cards. Apparently when they released docs that allowed for open-source drivers they couldn't do that for the accelerated hardware video decoder of current gen cards because of licensing issues or something. But from what I heard they will do that with the next gen stuff. So (at least with the linux side of things), we'll be getting a card that can do full h264 decoding. Might need to look that up though cause I'm not 100% positive.

The HD2400/2600 and HD3450/3650 already do a pretty good job at H264 decoding on windows,
I didn't realize the UVD was not supported in linux. Anyway, I want a passive 3650. I know HIS plans
on releasing one.

well its about the price a 2600xt, so its definitely better deal than a 2600xt.

though a 3850 256mb seems to be $159 or so (best buy has it forthat) so its almost 2/3 of the price,

This card doesn't include an HDMI adaptor, which is a deal breaker for me in an HTPC. I'm glad to see these new cards hitting the streets though.

you can buy a $50 amd x2 that will do all of the HD decoding that you'd ever need.
