<< Radeon II to be introduced soon - 6:38 pm EST - diesel [Comments (1)]
According to a CNET article, ATI will be introducing their latest Radeon chip soon after NVIDIA's GeForce3 product launch.

The Geforce3 gives a further edge to Nvidia, the top dog in the cutthroat graphics chip business. However, analyst Jon Peddie said that rival ATI Technologies will also be introducing the latest version of its Radeon family soon after the GeForce3 buzz dies down.
"They are waiting for the dust to settle" from Nvidia's announcements, said Peddie, head of market researcher Jon Peddie Associates.

Same 3D core as the Gamecube?

Even though it?s costly to produce a larger chip, Nvidia's use of the same core for the Xbox as for PCs will help cut the cost of the chip, Peddie said.
"The combination of the two platforms which don?t compete with each other allows them to build more parts which brings down the cost," Peddie said. ATI should enjoy a similar advantage by using the same core for Nintendo's forthcoming game console as it does in other markets.

I hope the "shimmering video" problem isn't present with that card.

Hopefully, it'll be a good card. I may have to upgrade to an AIW Radeon II card from my current AIW Radeon if it is.

Yeah, it was I think only on GF2's. ATI's new card will be mine this summer for both of my systems, no way am I paying $600 for the GF3.

If it's faster than an ultra, cheaper than a geforce3 then I'm going to get it. Even though I've been a loyal nvidia fan throughout the years, I refuse to support their new price stradegies, 350 is tops I'll pay for a video card, not 600.

A) ATi cannot use the graphics core from the Gamecube, as it was part of their agreement with ArtX(and Nintendo) when they purchased ArtX.
B) The ArtX people are pretty much a spinoff of SGI, and they have to have been working on something since they finished designing the Gamecube chip

I'd look the Radeon 3 as ATi's last chance at the gamer market unless NVidia screws up or Kyro makes some kick-ass product...

Well 64mb radeon is still a good card, when it first came out wasnt it like 400 dollars, I would just wait till it lowers in price, not buy it right away.

I hoping the geforce 3 will lower radeon 64 prices even more and make the radeon 64 an even larger steal. Then when the Radeon 2 comes round we shall see. As someone said, if it is better than the Ultra I will get it. Hopefully it will be better than the ultra.

Interesting. I can't wait to see the reviews of it. I hope ATi does well with it because competition is good for the consumer.

I thought the shimmering thing was only with the GeForce 2's?

No, Radeons had problems with Trinitron tubes as well.

it might share some aspects of Gamecube tech, but it cant be based on the core....i believe the biggest jump Radeon 2 will make will be to 4 pixel pipelines with perhaps 4 tmu's to each pipe...though highly unlikely. lets hope the drivers are up to snuff this time..

A5 is right. ATI cannot make a GFX card based off the gamecube chipset.

Thought I thought it was because it was not closely related to PC architecture.

Not true...before being bought by ATi, ArtX was going to release a PC videocard based off the GC chip.

You're not talking about that crappy one they called aladdin are you? That thing was totally unrelated to the GC, and the whole no GC chips on PC's was in place even before ArtX was bought I believe.

<< Argh, I hope my soon to be Radeon doesn't have troubles with my Mitsu Diamond Plus 91. >>

Don't worry, ATI has long ago fixed the shimmering problem, which wasn't that bad for most monitors anyway.

Alladin was a Ali/Nvidia product was it not? and yes it was true...ArtX was going to release a vid card based on the GC technology. they even were to deliver a speech at the same conference where Sony unveiled the PS2's innard..but at the last minute Nintendo stopped ArtX because they didnt want any GC related information released.

Didn't Dave Orton of ATI say that we will not see ArtX technology in an ATI card for at least 18 months??? I could have sworn that he said that in a recent interview.

Cheers,
