Check out response by Cakin in thread about Radeon 32ddr le

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=372011

Has anyone really tested to see if we have enabled hyper z with games that need it? Or are we fooling ourselves just because it tells us after we change number from 0 to 1 in registry. 0 being off and 1 being enabled...

Valuable info...since many have been promoting it (such as myself). I don't want to give false info...

Yes, it works. I've done it as have MANY others. The same performance increase as a normal Radeon card will be seen.

Oldfart (and others),

I've rea many of yours (and others) postings about the LE being the same as a normal Radeon 32M DDR once overclocked to 166 and with HyperZ re-enabled. And I've seen some postings of 3DMark results -- BUT -- those 3DMark results don't seem

But, I haven't seen a set of clear benchmarking showing the performance of an LE vs. a 32M DDR. "Clear" is I mean something like the results at Anand's video card reviews. I've just picked up an LE. I'm considering going out and buying a retail 32M DDR just to do the comparision...

I have a Radeon LE card, and i'm using Powerstrip to overclock it. I have it running constantly at 196.11 Mhz. I also mounted a fan on the heatsink itself and have no problems with overheating... This card rules... Oh by the way i used the fan out of the middle of the Blue Orb, fit's perfect. I heard some people saying that a socket 7 fan would work, but it hung out over the sides a little too much for my liking... A 40mm. fan also fit's well on the heatsink. I'm an avid Quake 3 player, and i am very impressed with this card...

Does Quake 3 use Hyper z?

I did the reg. hack and it didnt seem to have any effect on my benchmarking in Quake 3 demo001.

The LE only has HyperZ disabled by default in D3D. It's enabled in OpenGL. Tweaking D3D entries will have no effect on OpenGL games.

The LE cards are just those with the chips that did not exactly match the high end criteria for testing. So they just disabled the HyperZ and called it the Low End

I'm an active UT player (check out my UT server), and 1024x768x32 is my hoped for screen resolution.

The two tests I'm pursuing are Reverend's Thunder Demo under UnrealTournament, as used at Anand's 32M SDR Hyper Z tests, and 3D Mark2000, like the results depicted at this Radeon LE to Radeon Hack page.

That is, my system is a P3-700E, Abit BX6-Rev2, 256M PC100 CL2, Win98. None of my existing system is overclocked (although it could be 8-}). My system has a 235W power supply (which I'm taxing as it has 3 7200RPM drives + 1 10000 RPM drive, plus a CDROM and CDRW).

I've taken my "LE" and clocked it from the stock 143/143 to 176/176. I've added a spare 3-wire CPU fan to the heatsink. I enabled HyperZ, playing with all three of the tools (PowerStrip 3 beta, Radeon Tweaker 3.4, and the other tweaker).

I've run the 1024x768x32 3D Mark2000 test, and I get about 4030; which compares to the Duron 700 mentioned in the link above, which got that score on an actual Radeon DDR (not the LE); I think.

I've made a few runs of the Thunder demo, but I haven't collated all the results yet. My number's were about midway between the HyperZ enabled / disabled numbers; of course, his system was a 1.1G Athlon Tbird.

I'm not having any system problems, although I did see a square block artifact once under 3D Mark2000. When idle, my motherboard temp probe reports 35C; after playing UT for an hour, it reports 39C.

more to come, I guess.

I actually had a retail 32DDR and an LE OEM at the same time (I have since sold the retail). I benchmarked both cards on the exact same system using 3dmark:

LE OEM
Result Test GPU
4419 32bit color 189 Hyper-Z enabled
4899 default 189 Hyper-Z enabled
4583 default 166.5 Hyper-Z enabled
3880 default 166.5 Hyper-Z Disabled
2651 default 148.5 Hyper-Z Disabled

Retail 32DDR
4429 32bit 189
4916 default 189
4545 default 166.5

This is on a Celly II 566@953 112MHz FSB Abit BM6 320MB RAM. It was a while ago (January) so I can't remember which drivers I used.

I didn't do a comparision between the two using any games but with hyper-z on I definately get a framerate boost in Deus Ex using the LE. It's hard to say for sure since the Deus Ex testing I did had too many human variables for any sort of accuracy, but there was a definate improvement in framerate.
