Radeon LE Overclocking

I just got a Radeon LE from Newegg.COM (got it 2.5 days after i ordered!!! YES!) to replace my Monster Fusion (Voodoo Banshee with 16mb ram in case you didn't already know) and my Radeon just kicks my banshee's ass all over the place! I must say i'm VERY happy. But i'm a little nervous about ocing my radeon...i'm not sure what are some safe values. There's no fan, just a heatsink, but i read it doesn't really need a fan. Right now i've got the HyperZ hack on it and Powerstrip ocing it up to 170MHz...accually, i'm about to lower it to 166 for fear that 170 is too high. If anyone knows a good rage of clock speeds for this thing (remember...NO fan) i'd like to know to save me my new card. Thanks all.

I am looking into the radeon LE also, with a little overclocking and hyper-z its the same as the regular one. Try putting it at 166mhz core AND clock. With radeons you have to increase both of them or you will lose performance. Also what fps are you getting in q3 and cs? And how many 32 marks?

evilpig: from what i've read, you could oc the le up to 185/185 with no worries. i'm getting mine next week, and i'm gonna put it up to 175/175.
one person got theirs up to 190/190. so whatever the card can handle should be safe.

I just bought one from newegg also, and it kicks my voodoo3 2000 up and down the street. This may be a newbie question, but how do you go about overclocking it? Can you do it in powerstrip, and if so how.? And how do you know when it won't go any higher? Will it just stop working? Advice would be appreciated.

I also noticed that mine runs pretty hot after I have had the comp on for a while. It feels hotter then my t bird 800 heatsink does. Does that make any difference, and is it supposed to run that hot?

O yea, one more thing - how do you enable hyper z? It's technically not supposed to have it right.?

I got my Radeon LE up to 200 core , 200 RAM with a lot of cooling. It has a blue orb and ramsinks installed. Also, I have 2 case fans blowing on top and on the side. I ran the card at 166 before it was fairly cool with the stock heatsink. But I'd put a fan on it just in case. Better yet, use a blue orb and get it to 190+. Use Powerstrip to overclock the core and ram and then use Radeon Tweaker 0.11 to enable HyperZ and other various functions.

I pulled a fan off an unused socket 7 HSF.. works just fine and I ran it at 166 so far, why not.. I think that's what it's standard rated at anyway with 6ns ram (What's the site to covert ns to mhz? I forget )

Powerstrip, I THINK, will even make the registry entries for you if you configure it in the tabs. I went to make the registry hacks and they were already done for me.

kimcheeboy:

I know where to get the blue orb, but what kind of epoxy did you use...or did you use a thermal pad? i was thinking about getting something for my video card, but i'm new and i don't wanna make any bad decisions. In powerstrip it only lets me oc the mem clock anyway, so i guess it's automatic. I'm getting "rain" a lot too, but that may partly be cause by my oc PII-400 (since i reset the clock to the default 145.5MHz and i still had rain). Thanks all

Oh one more: I got 3166 3DMarks running the Standard test...but it would be higher if my processor could handle my radeon.

so a radeon le overclocked and w/ hyper-z = radeon 32mb ddr ?
and also, with your overclocked LE's and hyper-z, what fps do you get in Q3 and CS? and at what resolution and color bit

do a search. there have been a lot of threads about this. the short answer is yes, and the framerates are the same as the retail (with hyperz enabled).

I don't play cs very often, and i have yet to get some fps averages in q3a, but here's some numbers from UnrealTournament Direct3D drivers after playing CTF-Face for 10 minutes in each mode (I used all the weapons and even killed myself a few times with the redeemer to test the close-up rendering):

34.69 fps in 1024x768x16bit
35.69 fps in 1024x768x32bit

my system is:
PII-400 @ 448
320MB RAM w/ 112MHz FSB
Radeon LE 32MB DDR AGP HS/No fan @ 166.5MHz mem/core speed.

pretty damn good for a crappy system if you ask me...but then i just got off a banshee, so what do i know?
hope this helps, i'll post some q3a scores once i figure out how to get a fps console.

As for how to enable HyperZ...not only can you just do a search for it, but I'll post the code here.

Copy the following into notepad and save it as something like "radeon.reg" on your desktop and double-click it after you save it:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ATI Technologies\Driver\0001\atidxhal]
"DisableHierarchicalZ"="0"
"EnableWaitUntilIdxTriList2"="1"
"Vsync"="0"
"AntiAlias"="0"
"DisableHyperZ"="0"
"FastZClearEnabled"="1"
"ExportCompressedTex"="1"
"ZfogEnable"="1"
"WFogEnable"="1"
"TableFogEnable"="1"

This SHOULD work...but there have been a few instances where the "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ATI Technologies\Driver\0001\atidxhal]" line would change in the 4 digit part. Could be 0000, 0001, or 0002, etc. But 0001 is what it is on my system. Good luck!

I got a Radeon LE back in January and have been generally happy with it. I've taken mine up to 185/185 (the clocks are synchronous), and I believe Powerstrip 3.0 can enable/disable HyperZ. However, one thing to remember is that the Radeon in general does not get a lot of performance boost out of overclocking per se. From what I've read on another site, they ran benchmarks at 148/148, 166/166, and 183/183 (the range of speeds for all Radeon products), and while there were differences, they were not as huge as you might think. It's certainly not worth burning your card out for. The LE isn't a bad card at all, especially at under $100--I'd still take it over a Geforce2 MX. I benchmarked Q3A with a user-created demo available (I think) at planetquake.com since the regular demos won't run after you add the point release patch version 1.27. This demo gives me lower numbers than before (there are a lot of bots in it), and they all tend to be pretty close together in most resolutions until I go up to really high resolution. I got 60 fps in high quality mode (800x600x32) and 1024x768x32 and all the graphics settings turned up. However, even in Normal mode it wouldn't exceed 60 fps, which seems to me to be the benchmark be limited by my CPU rather than the graphics card. Still, it was playable up to 1280x1024, which is extremely impressive for $100!

I must have a different LE (bought for CDN$149). Using Powerstrip I o/c it to 191/191 and get a 3dMark of 5519 at default (If I set it to 185 3D Mark goes down to 5408). Quake 3 averages about 101/108 fps(demos 1&2) at 1024x768 16 bit using vertex. AT 32 bit and trilinear/lightmap it is 80/83 fps. I use a good sized fan on the core and have powerstrip.
