All results are with my boring everyday overclocks. I don't bench until I know the system passes stress testing and runs everything I can throw at it. 4.5GHz CPU, 2400 memory, each GPU set to sustain boost at 1GHz (between 1006MHz to 1045MHz), and video memory at stock (6000).
You should bench at 5ghz, it would give a very good boost. With a single card you don't see much difference from 4.6ghz to 5ghz. But with Quad, it really helps to have higher CPU clock.
Unfortunately for AMD (and previously ATI) it takes consumer backlash in order for them to really improve on something. CrossFire is great now and one of the reasons I wanted to try out 290Xs. It's too bad the high heat and power usage precludes that from happening. People are complaining, so it's only a matter of time before AMD fixes that too.
High heat? Are you watercooled or stock cooler?

Single card)
Because at 1200/1500, my max temp is 46'C on the GPu and 38'C on vrm1 and 30'c on VRM 2. And this is not because of my cooling system because the water cannot go under ambient level of 25'C.
Also I tested on air and if you raise the fan speed to 75% - 85%, you can easily achieve higher clocks. In reviews you see them at 55% stock BIOS. The card is not that bad believe me especially 11.5MP.
Also, at those speed and 4.8ghz CPU, benching, you can see an output of 650+ watts from the wall and with all the pumps (3), fans (33) , SSD(3), HDD (1) .
