HDMI drives my 2560x1440 at 60Hz just fine.

My experience has been completely the opposite on both nvidia and AMD cards. Although, the last AMD card I tried on was the 7970 - that is HDMI 1.4a as is the 290, so I don't think that would make a difference. I've attempted to use numerous ultrabooks and dGPUs with HDMI, and they are generally always limited to 1080p with HDMI. This is also a recurring theme with laptops in general (in the laptop/SFF forum) where HDMI doesn't work for driving WQHD monitors while mDP does.

In fact, dell support has told me in the past that greater than 1080p on a 1600p panel requires DVI-D or DP (even though their screens also include HDMI). I'm guessing that 2560x1440 with HDMI requires a complete interplay between the screen, gpu, cable, etc, but it usually doesn't work for whatever reason. There's something in the HDMI 1.4a spec that just doesn't jive with 1440p/1600p, since it's a mostly HDTV specification - i'm guessing that only certain monitor/cable combinations can do it but I haven't found any as of yet.

I'm also curious about what monitor and what cables you're using. I've always used latest (1.4a) spec HDMI cables, but maybe there's something i'm missing. If there's a cable somewhere that fixes this, that could be a great help - although i've always used 1.4a cables.

My monitor is the Auria EQ276W from Microcenter. Both my 290s are Gigabyte reference cards. As for my HDMI cable, it's one of these, my job bulk buys them for it's customers. It's labeled "All Systems Broadband" and is marked high speed. That's really all it shows.

I don't see anything special about this cable, but it works fine for me. I had been using DP on my 7970 Lightnings, but then switched to HDMI because I kept getting that bs monitor sleep bug. I haven't switched back to DP with my 290s because all I have is a DP to mini DP cable and the 290 DP connector is full size, plus with HDMI working, I have no need to switch.

Both the display and the GPU need to at least support HDMI 1.3 for 2560x1440 to work. You also need one of those high speed HDMI cables (the ones where it says broadband usually are high speed).
Some DELL monitors including the U2713HM don't have HDMI 1.3. I actually settled on a Korean panel which had both display port and HDMI 1.3 as well as DVI. Works like a charm on all input modes from my GTX 670 as well as from my 13" rMBP

Are you sure you are not at 2560x1440@30hz. Because the R9 290(x) have HDMi 1.4, its not HDMI 2.0.

Not to sound like a noob, I'd like to think I'm not, but how can I absolutely verify? Everything that I check shows 60Hz.

Interesting, I haven't checked color depth, didn't even cross my mind. I'll check it out later

Well, here are my settings, with shots of the relevant screens. Showing 2560x1440 at 60Hz, 32 bit color (only option in the menu), over HDMI.

More updates from Warsam71 about my issue here : Display Port issue with R9 290x QuadFire / TriFire / CrossFire (NEED SERIOUS HELP)

Hello Karl,

I just received an email from the guys in Customer Service which have been working on the issue with Engineering.

They have identified the issue and are working on a solution which will be included in an upcoming driver release. To be perfectly honest with you we don’t know when this new driver will be released yet; but I will definitely let you know as soon as I find out.

Best,

Sam T.

Thank you very much, I hope it will take a month or less for a fix.:awe:

I am following along as well. I have not had the flickering issue like you have unless I have something open in the background. I am more annoyed now at the wake on sleep bug, but I guess I just need to disable sleep state or set the timer really long. Just frustrating in the morning to have to power cycle to check e-mail.

Yeah it sucks, I always had this problem with AMD, it happenned with my 3 x 6970, and my 4 x 7970.

I decided to remove sleep from my system.

This might sound crazy after all the $$$ you have spent but I'll throw it out.

Sell all 4 290X's while the mining craze is high and recoup your $$ and buy 4 Titan blacks to run in SLI:whiste:

I'm losing faith.

Cards bought on last week of October 2013. It's now March 2014. I've been owning those cards for 4 months. And I've been disabling two cards and play on single monitor instead of 4 cards and triple monitors.

Well at some point you have to say enough is enough for that much $. I won't bore you with details of my foray into eyefinity. I mean, it's cool that AMD acknowledged the bug, that's great. Then again, results matter more than acknowledgement, period. The frame pacing issue with earlier cards in CF/EF was acknowledged as well and the time frame on that wasn't exactly inspiring. What you want is quick results. Not faith, hope, or anything like that. AMD is a corporate entity, not something to place hope in.

You, my friend, seem to have an abnormal amount of patience. I would've dumped those cards long ago, especially if 4 Nvidia cards work for your purpose (not sure if they do). You may be an ultra niche customer, but to have spent so much and not have the product work as intended is just inexcusable.

The suggestion to sell the cards now while mining maintains a high price doesn't sound all that bad.

Depending on the changes needed to fix this bug, it may take five or six months for a driver that addresses the issue to be released.

I'd be curious if you guys (Slomo4sho and Karlitos) can maesure power draw with a single card being watercooled at stock settings. That could answer the question of whether power draw drops (A little, dramatically,or even if it drops at all) with better cooling.I suspect you'll see quite lower power figures than those on air with the reference cooler.

I don't have my own power draw figures for air coolers but Tom's recent article does explore the power consumption difference between air and water:
