Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.8.1 Highlights

Support For
  • Monster Hunter™: World
    • Up toto 5% faster performance using Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.8.1 on the Radeon™ RX Vega 64 (8GB) graphics card than with Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.6.1 at 1920x1080 (1080p)1
    • Up to 6% faster performance using Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.8.1 on the Radeon™ RX 580 (8GB) graphics card than with Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.6.1 at 1920x1080 (1080p)2
  • World of Warcraft™: Battle for Azeroth
  • We Happy Few™
  • Madden NFL 19™

Fixed Issues

  • Fortnite™ may experience an application crash on game launch in Windows®7.
  • Some games may experience a game crash or hang on multi GPU system configurations when changing or applying resolutions.
  • Graphics and memory clock speeds may remain elevated or locked while gaming if video content is also playing on the system.
  • Civilization® VI may experience a game crash using DirectX®12 API on game or map launch.
  • Samsung™ HMD Odyssey may experience intermittent black screens or flashing on Radeon RX Vega series graphics products.

Known Issues

  • Cursor or system lag may be observed on some system configurations when two or more displays are connected and one display is powered off.
  • Some games may experience instability or stutter when playing with FRTC and Instant Replay enabled.
  • Toggling performance metrics while gaming on a non-native display resolution may cause the game to scale incorrectly.
  • Radeon WattMan memory and frequency sliders may not list correct minimum values.
  • Upgrade Advisor may fail to show up in Radeon Settings.
  • Radeon FreeSync may fail to enable when playing Monster Hunter™: World.
  • Video profiles may not correctly apply on web browser video content.

Added Vulkan™ Extension Support

  • VK_EXT_descriptor_indexing
    • This extension adds several small features which together enable applications to create large descriptor sets containing substantially all of their resources and selecting amongst those resources with dynamic (non-uniform) indexes in the shader.
  • VK_KHR_get_display_properties2
    • This extension provides new entry points to query device display properties and capabilities in a way that can be easily extended by other extensions, without introducing any further entry points.
  • VK_KHR_8bit_storage
    • This extension allows use of 8-bit types in uniform and storage buffers and push constant blocks.
  • VK_KHR_draw_indirect_count
    • This extension allows an application to source the number of draw calls for indirect draw calls from a buffer.
  • VK_KHR_create_renderpass2
    • This extension provides a new entry point to create render passes in a way that can be easily extended by other extensions through the substructures of render pass creation.
  • EXT_vertex_attribute_divisor
    • This extension allows instance-rate vertex attributes to be repeated for certain number of instances instead of advancing for every instance when instanced rendering is enabled.

I'm having memory speed problems with this version, compared to 18.7.1. If I use WattMan to set the memory clock to, say, 950MHz, then close and reopen it, it says it's set to 800MHz. From looking at the chart of clock speed, it looks like it's actually setting the minimum clock speed to 800, and the maximum to 950. The high minimum clock adds a surprisingly large 20W to my PC's idle power consumption.

There is new WHQL 18.8.1 Aug 17

Here is my score with 18.8.1 driver (27.790 was for 18.7.1 Jul19)
So far this one is the fastest for my config.

Vega 64 XTX LC 28k FireStrike GFX Score (w/Tesselation)
CPU 4016-4018MHz RAM 3080MHz CL14-15-15-15-34-54 1T w/GD
Vega goes up to ~1757-1762MHz (Stable, low temps, HotSpot ~68-70deg.)

I just got 18.8.1 working in the Vega FE driver stack today, and I'm having the same issue. I can add that my Vega FE likes to downclock to 800 MHz on a regular basis if for any reason it goes over power limit during a graphics bench (at +50% power limit, this never happens). I might have to do some testing to see exactly what was the issue here.

edit: it's simply a visual glitch. I can confirm after setting RAM to run at 980 MHz that it will, in fact, run at that speed constantly even if Wattman refuses to reflect the change in the Radeon Settings panel.

18.9.1 and newer aren't available through the Vega FE driver stack yet. Sadly. Also there's the Q3 Pro driver but I haven't bothered with that yet. I'm still on the 18.7.1 Pro driver stack, and until recently I was using 18.4.1 gaming drivers since 18.7.1 gaming driver refused to work on my Vega FE, at all.

They fixed the display of memory speed in later versions, but the idle clockspeed is still wrong even in 18.9.1, which they acknowledge in the release notes:
Radeon RX Vega Series graphics products may experience elevated memory clocks during system idle.
It's really annoying because the cooler can't cope with the extra heat with the fans off, so they regularly spin up for a few seconds then turn off again.

Good thing I use a custom fan profile.

Gotta say 18.8.1 is buggy though. Radeon Settings will crash nonstop after playing a game (though WattMan settings stay in effect). The only way I can bring it back is to force the driver to crash, causing WattMan settings to reset.
