I love Radiohead and will pay what's fair, but it looks like the price for the pre-order of the "Disc Box" is something like $80.

I wonder if they'd get more "donations" if they made it clear on the site that they have no deal with the music industry at this time and the album is being released solely by the band. Maybe that's not their style to be so blatant about it, but I can't help thinking that the majority of casual fans aren't aware. This is a nice little experiment in consumer psychology, if they ever release any sales figures it would be interesting to see how it turns out.

A lot of people are going to be following this story to see how far they can (or will) go without a major label's promotion and distribution machine. Radiohead is probably one of the few bands out there that would have a hope of making this work.

Yeah, I'd only want a CD. Why is the vinyl bundled with it?

The box set is priced in pounds (49 I think). I've been told a good rule of thumb on how to estimate prices in the UK is to take the price in the US (in USD) and substitute a pound sign for the dollar sign (basically, what it costs in dollars here it costs in pounds there). That might be why it costs $80 in the US.

The band seems to be self-distributing now, so maybe it'll come down if they decide to sign with a distributor here in the US. $80 for a double CD is a lot, but you can get that for free if you wish. The $80 is for the die hard fan who wants the LP and book as a collectible. Still a bit pricey, though, but I think that's due to UK distribution and the exchange rate.

but thats not how it works for many products

The brits get screwed for pricing.

The same is true especially for canada, or any country that has VAT for that matter.

Yea, $80 for the box. Luckily I have a record player and can listen to them (nice double vinyl releases always sound great), but not sure if I'm a big enough fan. I wonder if they will just have a plain regular cd release.

I believe he is suggesting that you will be able to purchase the product from a us retailer for around $49. Yes if you order it from this site for 40 pounds it will be $80, but you should be able to get it cheaper if you order/buy it stateside.

The "discbox" version won't actually ship until December. Ive read that the CD should be in stores (cd only) in early 08. You can always download the tracks for free now to enjoy them up until the cd hits retail stores.

I hope they sell a 2-CD version minus the vinyl, which I have no use for. I guess I would still pay $40-50 for the whole package just to have it, but I'm not paying $80. Damn you, weak dollar!
