These dipole speakers are an underground hit for use as surround speakers in a home theater setup. The thing that makes these a hot deal are the Linaeum tweeters. Whenver a RS product gets a good review I wonder...then I bought a pair. Not bad for $150, slightly better than the Klipsch 1.1's which IMO must be the most overhyped speakers around (zero bass, crap treble -- I've owned several higher end Klipsch models and the 1.1s stink to high heaven)

Whenever RS uses decent parts, they get a decent product. But...at $150/pair, they start getting some real competition. If you can find them, Pinnacle makes some good low end speakers, but finding a pair is tough. If these were $49 apiece, they'd be a steal. $75ea+tax puts them in the warm deal category if and only if you'd be happy with them as surround speaks.

My brother used 5 of the RS's in a cheapie HT setup. Not good. For $400+ there are better options with more breathing room.

BTW, didn't RS have an undergorund hit with the Optimus portable CD player about 5 years ago? I recall Sterepohile Magazine doing a love in about that.

Do not, I repeat, Do NOT buy these speakers with any intention of using them anywhere BUT as surrounds. The diffuse quality of the dipole Linaeums is the key, which is why THX specifies dipoles for use as surrounds.

The quality of the LX5 (I don't know what the RCA designation is now) is not nearly good enough for use as mains! You don't want to use any type of dipole as a main speaker. (owners of Mags and other planar speakers please forgive me )

...Or if you're looking for a REALLY good deal on these, run over to your local 'Shack and tell them that you're looking to buy a pair of the discontinued Optimus-brand-name versions of this same speaker. RCA bought out the A/V section of Radio Shack, so all of the old Optimus-brand speakers were re-branded with the RCA name (same stuff though for the most part, the speakers werent changed *at all*), and all the older stock was discontinued (and prices slashed). If you can find any left (the employee should be able to do a district-wide search and get a pair shipped to your location), they'll be going for $39.97 each.

Great speakers for HT when paired with a really good sub.
