Just got back from rat shack and got me one of these. Last one they had. Theres another rat shack more locally but its a franchise store so normal rat shack prices in chained stores don't apply there. I called them and they had some there but were $20 and couldn't sell for lower. Fine by me, i just went elsewhere.

There were a bunch of these at Radio Shack in Boscov's Mall near Lebanon PA for $10. I picked up another one to play with JP1 programming - figure I'll fry, er, try it

I picked up one of these and thought i would comment on how nice it feels too. A lot of remotes lack a good "hand-feel". This one is heavy and has a soft rubber finish. Button placement is good, but there is not a huge variety of button size and shape, so tactile feeling is just pretty good (being able to find buttons without looking down).

Edit: By the way, the shelf tag said $17.97, but rang up at $9.97.

I really like the Back lighting on the 2116 model, but for 1/3 the price i might return it and get this one.

I went to open up the Remote to figure out the JP1 connection..... It isn't that hard Now I understand the original poster's comment on the connector. The 6-pin connector is directly accessible when the battery door is opened. No need to unscrew and pry the case open like so many others. I cut up an old IDE cable for one end and now need to make the PC connector.

Great find! A bunch of RSs didn't have one, but then this one store had 11 of them, so I picked up two. The best is the learning capability. My Motorola cable box wasn't listed as a device, but it manually found the code. Can't wait to try the JP1 fun stuff.

For those of you who AREN'T home theatre/AV saavy, I highly encourage you to go out and get one of these. I bought one this morning--and I'm very pleased (btw, the Blacksburg, VA RadioShack had 4). Quite easy to learn--although, I did have to "learn" a few keys that for some odd reason didn't work off the bat (like the input selection for my receiver--go figure). The "macro feature" is very nice as well--no more switching all the inputs to the TV, receiver, and DVD player... one button does the trick.

And for other interested people, I seriously suggest checking out the links the other posters provided--they're very helpful.

Thanks to the original poster (PDS) for a great deal!

This remote is kewl. It would be nice to have more spaces around all the buttons. There simply all grouped together in one big bunch. Also, it states that when you select a component( tv, vcr, cd, etc.) the buttons which operate that item are highlighted with an individual color. Well the same buttons lite-up no matter which mode i'm in. No biggy really. Making that jp1 interface was easy and it helped alot in getting this thing to work with my equipment. Unlike tons of remotes i've tried, this one actually operates ALL of my equipment. By the way, I made my jp1 interface connector from a sound card audio wire which normally plugs to a cd-rom drive. It had a 4 plug socket at each end, so i simply cut the wire in two, glued both 4 plugs together to make a 8 hole plug, wired (since it had 2 red, black, white wires, I had to make sure I was using the right ones) it up to a 25pin connector and it works. I then made a mark on the remote so I know which way this 8 hole plug connects. This wire is just under a ft long. Very easy job.

I picked up a couple of the Radio Shack 6-in-1 Smart Remotes (15-2104) from the Bowie (Race Track Rd.), MD store. This store still had 12 of them in stock.

Sak, I have a Panasonic ReplayTV (2 years old). I use the VCR button on the remote and I think I used 0616. I just followed the code list on the manual, which you can download from here. The manual listed "ReplayTV" under VCR specifically. Hope this help.

I took a look at this and passed because it didn't appear to be a learning remote. I know everything is relative and for $10, what can you expect but the inability to learn new commands is a unacceptable limitation when buying a "universal" remote.

I think your assumption is wrong.
It is a Learning Remote....

Not only does this remote "learn" other codes (memory permitting) but it can learn a new code to almost any button (manual says only the 4 "smart" keys can learn, but in fact they all can, except the device keys of course).

Btw, credit for this deal goes to a poster on the Yahoo JP1 message forum here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1/messages/

Learn all about JP1 and the 15-2104 remote there.

I stand corrected...I guess. All I could see was 4 "smart" keys on the box which didn't seem to offer a lot of flexibility or customization.

Making the JP1 cable was simple for me. I used the "simple" option with a cut-up IDE cable, a db25 connector and cover from radio shack along with the two resistors and one diode.... what a beautiful construction manual at Yahoo. Now, of course, I have to figure out what all the JP1 stuff is.... Been enjoyable just reading the files - but I'm a nerd anyhow.

Now to go buy another one for later.
