I'd like to see another Quake arena with this new engine. Not the quake live crap. I just wonder how many other 3rd party devleopers will actually bother to license this engine? So many seem to prefer Unreal 3 engine, for good reason.

Glad they made a multiplat engine where you just push a button so to speak to spit out platform versions but i still think ID will have a hard time getting this engine used in very many games outside of whatever crap Splash damage puts out.

Quake 4 sucked. I played it for about 5 minutes and never played again.

way to judge a game. glad you don't write reviews.

Bethesda has already announced they won't be licencing the engine to outside developers, so it won't be competing with the unreal engine. Id has also expressed interest in a new version of Quake that returns to the original roots of the game complete with all the monsters instead of another strogg universe arena style.

why wouldnt they want to license to outside devs? I don't see an oldschool Quake doing very well finacially with todays gamers.

Developers will be able to license this engine(idTech 5), with the only caveat being that the resulting game has to be published by Bethesda.

so does Skyrim use the Tech5? if not i wonder why?

Skyrim uses a new engine they made for it called the Creation Engine. As for why, I dunno, maybe they started work on it before acquiring iD, maybe this engine is really focused towards RPG games like TES series and new FO's, or the iD Tech 5 engine simply wasn't in a ready enough state when they started to do work on Skyrim.

It uses it's own engine, probably because work on it started before Zenimax bought out id. They would have lost a year of so worth of work which would have been a large waste of money.

Edit: Didn't type fast enough..

I'm definitely waiting on reviews for this one. If it's good I'll definitely be jumping on it though.

I give id a pass on this pre-order thing. But that's my personal discretion based on my experience with all of there games since castle wolfenstein.

I didnt give the new deus ex or dead island this luxury even though I wanted to buy both. It saved me from buying dead island.

From the gamespy archives:

GameSpy's 25 Overrated Games Of All Time - http://archive.gamespy.com/articles/september03/25overrated/

#5 Quake II

At one time id software was an industry leader, but over the past decade id has fallen further and further behind the times. The last id game that I would even consider being "good" is Quake II.

How can a game developer that has shown to be a decade behind the competition, suddenly leap forward to produce a game that is with current trends? I doubt id can pull it off.

I hope rage is a great game that will put id back in the forefront of the game development community. But with their past examples, I doubt it.

From the Dave Simmons Archives---You're entitled to your opinion, no matter how out of touch with reality it might be.

Q2 single player was fun and with hardware 3D and colored lighting was a big step forward visually for its time.

Q2 multiplayer was all kinds of awesome. deathmatch, CTF, rails only, grappling hook, mods and custom levels.

Quake 4 gameplay was outdated when the game was released.

Very few people like to backtrack to find a key, or escort someone back through the level.

Ever since the release of half-life in 1998, game design has been going towards linear or open world designs.

Quake 4 and doom 3 used pretty much the same type of design that the original Doom used. You had to backtrack to get stuff, then go back through the level a second time.

As for Rage, if it tries to use the find the key, find the pda, backtrack to get something to open a door,,,,,,, the game is going to fail.

The big thing about rage, will the developers opt for an open world system like what fallout 3 has, or a semi-open world like what borderlands has, or will they use the same old system that id has used since Doom?

If I buy Rage, and have to backtrack a single time, the game is going to be removed from my system and put on the shelf.

I bet your the kid who always talked smack all the while getting ass raped by us better players.

Nah, he be right there- solving intelligence items is a waste of time and slows down what were to be a fast paced killing experience, laced with fear, self pity and murderous intent. They were a poor copy of the rather ingenious physical traps, mysteries and puzzels embedded in the better games, doom and then half life.

Q2 multiplayer might have been good, but it was nowhere near Quakeworld.

When people talk about the best deathmatch game ever made, I rarely see Q2 mentioned, its always Quake. Going from Quakeworld to Q2, was like going from a Ford Mustang (Quakeworld) to a Ford Pinto (Q2).

Kid?

I am 43 years old, and I was playing quakeworld deathmatch, CTF, TFC and RocketArena "back in the day". I even went to Quakecon in 1998 and 1999.

Come back when you get some real experience in deathmatch multiplayer games.

As for Rage, I think I am going to wait until the Christmas - new years sales and see if it goes on sale.

If rage goes on sale at the end of the year, I will probably pick it up.

This game looks like it could be fun, however it doesn't look like it brings anything new to the table. Open world is nice, but with no RPG elements I don't think I would be motivated to explore.

If it is the typical id game it will look pretty and be no fun to play. I wait for a steam sale. I also don't trust reviews for over hyped big games, they are always very kind (see Halo3, GTA4, etc.).

Plus Dark Souls comes out the same day and is a much less cliche release. Rage looks like Fallout 3 without the RPG stuff.

Yeah, I remember Q2 being a "disappointment" in the community, but I really liked the multiplayer in Q2 and spent more time playing it than I'd like to admit.

I recall GLQuake made Quake 1 unbelievable, and I had spent hours playing it with my Righteous 3D II card, but Q2 Threewave capture the flag soon dominated all my gaming time.
