Finally got my copy in, and I'm installing it right now. I hope I don't get screwed with texture pop in and all that other garbage!

Damn, it's taking a long time just to install this game! 21GB install!

Let us know how it goes for you. I have a similar system.

OK, I played the first few minutes after getting out of the ark and out into the main area, and insofar, I haven't had any horrible texture pop in thank God! It's there, but it's barely noticeable.

Nvidia released a Rage profile update today, that makes sure the game runs on one GPU with V-sync disabled.. I tried enabling V-sync, and that made the texture pop in WAY more noticeable, so I recommend running the game with V-sync off, and on one GPU if you're using X-Fire/SLi.

GPU transcoding I turned on, but I haven't tested it personally to see what kind of effect it had on the texture streaming process. From all accounts though, GPU transcoding helps to alleviate it significantly.

Performance wise, the game is very smooth at 60 FPS, 2560x1600 with 4xAA and 16xAF (the latter forced in the control panel).

Looks wise, I'm not impressed at all so far. I thought that reports of muddy textures were over blown, but now that I've played the game for myself, I can see they aren't.

This game is horribly consolized, no mistaking. The dynamic texture thing must be broken, because my GPU has 1.5gb of VRAM and my rig has 12GB of system memory, but some of the textures are still very muddy.

The railing on the ledge outside of the ark for instance, looks terrible! I hope they release a texture update, because this is ridiculous for a developer like ID..

I'm using the latest drivers, 285.38. as well..

install the AMD update, the texture pop vanishes

however it appears that AMD Driver update does NOT play nice with Logitechs latest version of their mouse software, driver will crash and then recover, seems to work fine after that

also the gui for the mouse software will NOT display correctly, if you are like me simply reboot and never open it and it should be fine

I just play along here in the first mission--no problems--more open than a regular Doom game but otherwise , its kill or be killed--just what i like.

ok everything plays fine now however textures are still shit. I'm leaving CCC open on another monitor and my gpu activity stays between 40% and 50% with 8x aa and v-sync forced on and triple buffer going.

I'm running a 6970 2gb. Dont ever worry about updating for this game your machines will snore thru it.

Sounds like it would be a good idea for id to release the texture pack.

Maybe finally a game that justifies cards that have way too much memory (like the low end ones that have like 2GB)?

Just got done with the first mission.

I will say the texture popping seemed atrocious on my 25x16 monitor. I'm guessing because of the auto gfx option so it can get 60fps. My detail level was also limited to about 30 ft in front of me, after that everything was just a big blocky blur permanently.

I didn't plan to play this on my 25x16 tho. Loaded it up on the 58" 1080p plasma and it looked gorgeous. Detail distance was probably at max. Texture popping was very slight. Visible only if you turned rapidly, and even then it's only on the very edge of the screen for a few milliseconds. Not a game breaker, and surely will be fixed completely soon.

Yes when you get up close, texture quality is so pathetic it's almost laughable. Despite this, overall the game looks great, and graphics don't make the game imo. Game seems like fun so far, so guess I will now open my copy. Had to play the "demo" first.

Guys, I don't know if you guys knew this yet, but there is a problem with the installation of the game and one directory that is used to store memory cache is missing, and therefore the system fails to cache memory. This affects both AMD and Nvidia users.

humm i dont have a ID Software folder inside users\appdata\local

yes im showing hidden stuff

the ATI updated driver fixed all the tearing for me however, I only played for about 15 min but it seemed fine after that. steam did DL a patch after i installed it but IDK if that was the stuff from the anarchy ed or a fix, will see tom.

prob wont get any time with it until this weekend anyway

I don't have that folder either, but I don't have any issues with texture popping.

I just can't believe the textures are so shitty.  There has to be a way to lock the texture at max detail, because I'm sure that dynamic scaling isn't working properly like it should.

OK, this is console garbage. This looks worse than videos I've seen of the 360 version. Some pop in, but once it pops in it still looks like shit. I mean, its worse looking than any PC game I've played this year...worse than Mount and Blade: Warband, and thats a budget game from a couple of years ago. There are also UI issues that just scream console garbage, like cant edit some key bindings, specifically F5 and F9. You try to use a controller for the driving, and you can't use KBM for menus. You quit the game, and it doesnt quit, but brings you to a screen where there are no options except to hit enter so you can see a menu which allows you to quit. Its like it expects you to use a dashboard to quit the game. When you hop on the atv you can't use the mouse to look, just wasd. I can't imagine someone trying this on PC for cert and thinking its good. Unless they people were mainly console players.

Gameplay wise moving and shooting feel good, but I've only played the first mission and I find it odd that the bandits and hopping around and ducking behind cover all the time. Are these bandits descended from Mary Lou Ret...errr Shawn Johnson?

I'm tempted to not play at all until its patched, as I have a feeling I would finish the main game before it gets patched. I was looking forward to playing this maxed out, but I would settle for 360 graphics. Its disappointing when even id cant make a decent PC game. Not talking about a revolutionary game, just a freakin decent game.

So installing the new patch fixed a lot of problems for me for a while, the corruption I was getting is gone and the texture pop in was hugely reduced, like I only see it if I spin around really fast. The game is getting kind of boring though, feels like every mission is just go here kill a bunch of bandits and then come back or some variation of that.

Anyway I got to Wellspring and all of the models are corrupted there, the animations are all jerky and they flicker and corrupt. I might wait for some patches to get released I hate playing through a game like this.

Textures are too blurry for me. I can't deal with the lack of image quality. This thing in hi res textures would look amazing but the low res bs is unreal.

The last item is what I discovered last night. When I dropped the resolution down to 1920x1080 windowed, it looked better. Dropping down to 1280x720 windowed made things look much better, like the videos you see of Rage. It makes sense when you think the textures were optimized for 720p on consoles.

I also stuck the following in
Code:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\rage\base\rageconfig.cfg

set cg_usecompression 0
set cg_useprecompressedtextures 0
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizevmtr "8192"

I preordered Rage and I'm not disappointed, I'm not thrilled to tears, but I'm not disappointed either. All I can say is its the weirdest id tech game ever and don't be surprised if you keep going back and forth trying to decide if you love it or hate it (very much like some women I've known). For those trying to decide whether to buy it or not I'd suggest waiting because the price may drop very fast due to the launch problems and mixed reviews.

This is the no-frills stripped down version of the new id tech 5 engine and its pretty obvious they wanted to make at least one game that could use the engine on anything from an iPhone to a PC and test it out before adding new features. AMD made a stupid mistake and the first Patch they put out was bad, but they corrected that right away. Now we just need to wait for id to put out the first patch to deal with the usual problems new games have.

The engine provides an amazing amount of unique detail everywhere you look and the draw distances are impressive, but some of the individual textures are really bad. Carmack has suggested they might release a 75gb super high texture pack for PC that should make it truly eye popping, but might require a 2gb video card to use.

IT won't and cannot look better on the 360. Same textures and 720P no AA. Unless your PC sucks or something. Watching small youtube videos is not representative of real graphics.

I have an i7 950@4Ghz, 12GB RAM, and GTX 570SLI. Its not the PC, its the low res textures. The higher resolution you play at the worse it will look. In my case, I normally play at 2560x1440. It looks best at 1280x720 windowed, which is what I think most of the promo videos were made at.

This has to be the single buggiest major software release I've seen in my entire life. I'm dumbfounded id released something in this state. Now I've never really thought id games were the holy grail, but they are usually at the very least pretty polished. This is coming from someone who (based on the reports around the web) it's actually running somewhat well for.

The game's issues are just strange. First of all it seems everyone needed to update drivers, fine, that happens from time to time. The textures are a major issue, sometimes they look ok, sometimes horrible. Part of the problem here is I don't know if I'm seeing what I'm supposed to be seeing or not because of the lack of advanced graphics options. Is this the best quality look or is it erroneously downgrading the settings? The huge thing for me and I don't know if this is system specific to me or not as I haven't researched into it yet.....Half of the time the game performs very well on my pc whether it looks good or not, very smooth, fluid motion/mousing common to id games. The other half of the time it's like I'm suffering from the most major microstutter ever encountered....WTF? By half the time I don't mean in some parts of the game and not others, I mean one play session is perfect and the next time I play the game it's total crap. What the hell changed and why does it go back and forth??? Finally save corruption....I ran into this earlier today, this is not you're typical save corruption. The save itself loads up perfectly fine, the game plays fine, that is until you try to go to another (any other area that requires a load screen) area. The game then hard locks on the loading screen with no error or indication no matter how long you wait, I just thought it was taking a LONG time to load the first two attempts.

The sad thing is this took id six years and it really really feels exactly like what I imagine playing a pre-alpha state Borderlands felt like. The bright spot in that is I love Borderlands.
