Say I use 2 36GB Raptor SATA drives in Raid 0, will the effective transfer rate come close the 300mB/s? Raid 0 basically doubles the transfer rate, right?

Just making sure I undestand this properly.

If you had two SATA devices in a RAID 0 configuration using 2 seperate SATA channels the thoeretical maximum would be 300MB/sec. However no Raptor, or any other drive on the market, can do 150MB/sec. The 150MB/sec that is listed is the maximum bandwith that an SATA channel can do.

On SCSI drives, they often are rated around 300 mB/s as well. Is that an obtainable transfer rate, or just the theoretical rate?

Skru the maximum throughputs... just do the raid thing... It's certainly better than a single drive. But be forewarned... three hams will certainly kill him... er, sorry, I meant to say, once you go raid, it's tough to go back to a non raid system.

thats what they all said till 1 drive die and you end up losing both or when you switch motherboards, you run into compatibility problem

So, Raid 0+1 is just a raid 0 array, mirrored?
Does the drive used to mirror it have to be an identical raid 0 setup, or can it be mirrored onto a comparable sized single drive?

RAID 0+1 is a RAID 0 mirrored. 4 physical drives. All four drives, regardless of actual capacity, are the same size. You can have a 40, 60, 80 and 120GB if you want, you'd get a 80GB RAID 0+1.
Mirroring it to a single drive can be done, but why (that'w what RAID 1 is for)?. IIRC, isn't that what was coined RAID [marketting] 1.5 or something like that?

hey if I do RAID 1, and a drive goes down, can I pop the other drive into a different machine, minus raid card, and read from it?

TIA

You should be able to as that drive is an exact copy of the drive that went down.
