Raid 0?

I wouldn't mind the performance increase, I don't want to do raid 1 cause I like my storage space.

No real difference for gaming, increased risk of data loss, additional hastle for creating it. If you want to then by all means, but it's not going to make your life much better and a well implemented 2 drive system will be faster for many tasks.

Today, single hard disk drives offer the same performance as a RAID 0 setup.
Its not worth it, in my opinion.

In that case, I could just set up JBOD. Should I buy one more hard drive and go raid 5??

I find there is a difference. Ive used both my drives with and without raid and I personally can tell a difference especially in loading games. I like loading first in games like BF2 to get a jump on the enemy.

If you are worried about the storage space, then no. Because you shouldn't do RAID 0 on stuff you can't afford to lose. Simple as that.

How many disks are you going to be putting in this array? RAID 5 really starts to shine with 4+ disks. But if you don't need it, don't mess with it. Do you already have these hard drives? I'd recommend getting a fast disk for boot, and then a big disk for storage... Just my recommendation though.

Alright.....this is what I have. I have a 20GB hard drive running IDE with my operating system on it. I have (2) 250 GB hard drives (SATA) that I haven't hooked up get because I'm trying to determine what the best setup is before I put anything on them. RAID 0? Buy one more hard drive and do raid 5?(I can't afford to buy 2 more right now, but I could sqeeze one more out) Just use them seperately like normal storage? or should I do a JBOD configuration so they read like one disk?

What are your needs in this? I know you are looking for performance, but why? Do you game? Are you doing video editing? Because that matters. If you are just a casual user, and do different things, I'd say hook them up seperatly, no RAID. And ditch the 20gb. (Actually, get an external enclosure for it--they are great for moving files around on different machines at different locations)

I'm looking to do video encoding, dvd burning(only mine of course), and some video editing from my movie camera, some gaming......maybe like Command and Conquer Generals, but I'm not a "gamer", I just like to play sometimes........
