RAID 0

Hi guys, I have just bought a Promise Ultra100 TX2 to be used with a 40GB IBM 60GXP. The drive will be on its own on the RAID array at the moment. Is this an ok combination?

Yea, I guess that should be said. You wont get RAID 0 until you add 2 or more drives...you'll just use the RAID connector as an IDE connector.

Something else to think about also is that if one drive goes bad you loose what is on both. A lot of people with IBM drives have been complaining of drive failures. I see you have the 60GXP series so you should be alright though. Just back up important information.

Well, since I am a newbie to this sort of thing. Am I correct in saying that as long as I have one drive that it will work? I just want it as an addon back up drive, not as a super fast drive.

What do you mean that if one dirve goes bad I lose all of the data, even the data saved on the drives or the data being transmitted through that IDE channel?

to have a raid setup u need 2 drives.

the most common raid setups are raid 0 and raid 1..

Raid 0 is all about speed.

Raid 1 is mirroring.

which one are u wanting to do? Seems like u want mirroring. since u said u want a add-on back-up drive that means u want to MIRROR right? well if u want to mirror u have to buy another hard rdive (if u want 40gb space have to get another 40gb hard drive). if u want to mirror u will have ot go out and buy another 40gb hard rdive. should be same speed. and best to be the same model (60gxp in your case)

well if u dont want to run raid u can use that raid card. i believe if u have a raid card and just want mirroring but cant afford a new hard drive atm u can still use your computer and when you can afford a hard rdive just put one in and it would automatically mirror everything for ya (not to sure on this but i thought i read it some where)

correct u cannot raid with only one hard drive

yes you can use 1 drive on a raid controller. it just wouldnt be RAID. it would be just like using a normal ide controller

The raid card is a Promise Fasttrack

The regular ATA100 is the Ultra 100, I have one of those in my system as well but not the TX2 version (they use the same chip either way).
