Raid 1 failure

I have an issue with a Win 2003 server running raid 1. I'm not that familiar with raid so bare with me. Disk 1 failed and says missing under disk management. Disk 0 says Online but Failed Redundancy (System). It appears that disk 1 and 0 both have bad blocks. How can I replace a drive and restore the mirror without losing everything? I assume I need to replace the first drive and recreate the mirror somehow then I can replace the second.

Any imput appreciated.

Ah...good old Windows Software RAID...


First, if you don't have backups of the data, I'd get them now.

Once that's done, in Disk Management, you can break the RAID mirror, and then create a new mirror of the still-functional drive, using the new drive that you've added.

If you want to practice doing this stuff, download a trial (6 months) version of Server 2003, install it into Virtual PC or Virtual Server, and then create several virtual disks and practice removing them, breaking mirrors, etc. That's what I do before I do ANYTHING with dynamic disks.

let this be a note to all Raid users, regardless of what Raid you're using, there is still a possibility of your array failing. In this case, two of his drives failed simultaneously, it can, and probably will happen to you too, given your luck.

Remind to ALL users: back up important files to an external HDD or Server.
