Hi, I have two WDC 4TB Black drives (WD4001FAEX) in RAID 1. I would like two add two additional drives for a RAID 10. Could I use the new version of this drive (WD4003FZEX) in the same RAID? Thanks.
There shouldn't be a problem with using the newer versions of the drives. As long as the drives are the same capacity (and brand in some cases) you should be fine. There could be some issues, since the older version is a bit slower (In an array you are limited to the speed of the slowest drive). There are some other small differences, you can check them out here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=2xovMN. Generally, you should be fine, however you could encounter some small drawbacks. However, I would like to add that the WD Black is a performance orientated drive and is great for gaming, but is not developed for a RAID setup. The WD Red is developed for the demanding, 24/7 conditions of NAS environments. They have features such as NASware 3.0, TLER which allows for error recovery and prevents drives from being dropped out of the RAID and lower operating temperature. With that in mind I would suggest considering building future RAID arrays with such drives as they are extensively tested for such conditions.
