RAID 5 question. what if the raid controller goes bad?

isn't the data on the HD's toast?

seems like a pretty big problem. can you rebuild raid 5 data with a different raid controller?

You should be able to rebuild the raid using another controller that is the same model and firmware.

you can also take an image of each drive and using a software to rebuild the data. Granted you would need a hell of a lot of space for that. I can remember the name of the program, but a friend of mine did it for his brother who lost a RAID 0 array.

RAID0 is NOT the same as RAID5. jondercik has the correct recovery process for RAID5 arrays.

Yes, we've done it multiple times over the years, with various different controllers. (All SCSI or Fiber, commercial grade equipment)

Compaq/HP arrays generally don't need the same card and firmware, that is supposed to be one of their advantages. I've moved a raid 5 from a very old adaptec card to a new adaptec and had it work.
