It's a hardware question, but I don't think 99% of the General Hardware crowd will know what a JBOD is. Hopefully on topic...
I recently purchased a SCSI RAID controller and have been playing around with it (In fact I'm using two 10krpm U2W SCSI RAID0 disks on this machine to type this). There are a couple of things that I couldn't find adequately documented in the manuals.
A JBOD appears to be a way of combining multiple irregularly shaped hard disks together in hardware to form one larger logical drive. But does this affect reliability? It doesn't sound like the data is striped... so if one drive dies, does it take the others down too? If I were in a really weird mood, could I take a JBOD of 2 9GB disks, and then take my 18GB disk and put the two together to make a 36GB RAID0 array (9+9 vs. 18GB striped).
On my controller, I first hooked up one drive and then I noticed that there was only one option in the controller: RAID 7. I chose this and it seemed to work. I had a one disk RAID7 array. Then later I looked up RAID 7 and this didn't seem right RAID 7 looks like it wants a minimum of 4 disks. My controller is a Mylex AcceleRAID 150. The web documentation seems to suggest that RAID 7 is a proprietary method used by one vendor (and it's not Mylex). Does Mylex just call single-drive SCSI mode "RAID 7"? Or am I missing something obvious?
