I need some help, I am trying to set up raid on two harddrives that I have. The raid controller is a built in High point controller. The mobo is Abit kr7a-133 raid. I have two hard drives, both are 40 gig, one is a ibm 120gxp, and the other is a maxtor. On the maxtor I have a lot of files that I do not want to loose. Songs, movies, games, documents, etc.... On the other is my operating system, and all the relevant programs that I have installed. Both hard drives are partitioned so that they are split in half. I noticed that when I went to set up the raid, it told me that I would loose all my data on the hard drives. Is there anyway around this? Is there anyway to back up the harddrives, and restore them after the raid array of 0 is installed? Any info that you all provide will be helpful.

Yes you will loose everything on both drives. If you want to save the data, just setup the drives on the regular IDE ports, boot the system, then use whatever backup method you normally use (to tape or burn CDs), and then shut down and change the configuration. NO, there is no way around this, since in the new setup the drives will be accessed totally differently then they were before (striping). You will have to start just like it was a blank drive after creating the raid array. (fdisk, format, install OS, install software, etc...)

Listen to the man...he knows what he is saying. For optimal performance, both hard drives should be the same as well...

Going RAID involves some work and in some cases headaches for few. I believe that it is worth it, however. I love all my RAID arrays.

So if you have a new system sitting there....you want to have Raid (Mirrored) and you want to install Windows 2000 server on these how do I go about it?

People have said it's done in the Disk Management MMC snap in but.....If both drives have to be wiped i'm a bit confused about how it works....my initial thought was install Windows 2000 server onto disk 1, use the MMC and it mirrors it onto disk 2 and they then work as raid....is this wrong?
