To my AMD family,

Forty is a significant number in history. It is a number representing transition, testing and change. I have just spent forty days away from the office going through such a transition. It was an important time with my family, and it also offered me a rare space for reflection. During this time I have come to the extremely difficult conclusion that it is time for me to leave RTG and AMD.

I have no question in my mind that RTG, and AMD, are marching firmly in the right direction as high-performance computing becomes ever-more-important in every aspect of our lives. I believe wholeheartedly in what we are doing with Vega, Navi and beyond, and I am incredibly proud of how far we have come and where we are going. The whole industry has stood up and taken notice of what we are doing. As I think about how computing will evolve, I feel more and more that I want to pursue my passion beyond hardware and explore driving broader solutions.

I want to thank Lisa and the AET for enabling me to pursue my passion during the last four years at AMD, and especially the last two years with RTG. Lisa has my utmost respect for exhibiting the courage to enable me with RTG, for believing in me and for going out of her way to support me. I would also like to call out Mark Papermaster who brought me into AMD, for his huge passion for technology and for his relentless support through many difficult phases. And of course, I want to thank each and every one of my direct staff and my indirect staff who have worked so hard with me to build what we have now got. I am very proud of the strong leaders we have and I’m fully confident that they can execute on the compelling roadmap ahead.

I will continue to be an ardent fan and user of AMD technologies for both personal and professional use.

As I mentioned, leaving AMD and RTG has been an extremely difficult decision for me. But I felt it is the right one for me personally at this point. Time will tell. I will be following with great interest the progress you will make over the next several years.

On a final note, I have asked a lot of you in the last two years. You’ve always delivered. You’ve made me successful both personally and professionally, for which I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I have these final requests from you as I leave:

. Stay focused on the roadmap!
. Deliver on your commitments!
. Continue the culture of Passion, Persistence and Play!
. Make AMD proud!
. Make me proud!

Yours,
Raja

you don't have koduri to kick around any more, because, gentlemen, this is his last press conference.

edit: that was 55 years ago today

Raja was unfortunately poor at executing and getting products out at the right time. Ever since RTG was founded they have been worse and worse in pretty much anything regarding GPUs. Its not that Nvidia suddenly became super developers. The problem the entire time have been a sucky team working on AMDs videocards.

Probably a great guy and clearly had a passion for videocards but the results under his watch was just awful.

Funniest part for me is that just yesterday I was wondering: what happens with Raja? Is he going back to AMD or not...?

I found out very soon.

Well no shit. This was obviously going to happen, when he went on sabbatical or stress leave or whatever he called it when Vega launched and flopped this was only option. I believe i even said as much in the thread about him going on leave

Probably for the better. Doesn't leave me with much hope for Navi, though.

I don't think its fair to pin the blame entirely on Raja, but I don't think I'll be sad to see him go. AMD GPU presentations were abysmally awful with him leading them and felt incredibly amateurish. I understand that not everyone is good at presenting, but if you know that you're not good at it, find some people on the team who are and get them on stage after introducing the event.

Their capsaicin events would have been forgivable if they had truly great products to show off, but that wasn't the case and it became difficult to get excited about anything RTG had to talk about.

It's a shame to lose someone with as much experience and knowledge as Raja for any company, but like many tech companies find out, not every great engineer is a great manager. We'll never know if RTG was hamstrung by resources or if the team was really incompetent like some here believe. Either way best of luck to him and if this is personal and not professional at all, choosing your well being and your family is always the right choice when it comes to these matters.

It's got to be hard to run anything at amd. I dunno if anyone here has tried to get a job at those companies, but when Nvidia and Intel offer you 20-40% more, it's hard to even consider amd as anything other than a last resort.

It's hard to get the second choice of talent and still do well.

Agreed, AMD doesn't attract the kind of talent it used to. Everyone I knew working with them up in Austin has moved to Intel or Samsung and have doubled their salaries in the process. AMD is going to need their CPU division to do the heavy lifting for a few more years before they can offer the kind of pay that top tier talent demands.

The funny thing is like AMD is failing hard on the desktop GPU department, nVIDIA is failing even harder on the mobile GPU department... heck, Adreno is defeating them without problems and Imagination is now a treat. At this pace, even Vivante would be an oponent for them.

This is a company that Raja might end up - http://www.insightfulvr.com/insightfulvr/

I agree that he will end up somewhere that has heavy VR ambitions. Raja's decisions as head of RTG seemed to be influenced by VR, he is a firm believer in the technology and being a big part of the future for GPUs. I think it didn't move as fast as he anticipated it would which may be part of the decision to leave. Wherever he ends up there may be a partnership with that company regarding VR, just like Keller and Tesla, Read and Dell. AMD wants to return to producing high performance GPUs again just as they have with CPUs.

Well he didnt have results so no surprise he leave.Since 290x AMD didnt have single good High-end card.
Also AMD is still stuck with GCN.Vega have still 4x Shader engines which is bottleneck since furyX a they didnt fix that.
