Hi,

I am planning to build a budget PC with the Ryzen 5 2400G CPU.
I have just purchased the ASrock B450M PRO 4, which was on sale on Newegg.

In terms of buying RAM, I am pretty much settled on:

G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Intel Z170 Platform / Intel X99 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-16GVKB

However, that RAM is not displayed on the ASrock website QVL list. It is however compatible with the motherboard based on pcpartpicker.
It is often on sale and its the best quality value RAM I found on Newegg

Does anyone know if this RAM is actually compatible with the ASrock B450M PRO 4? I
Should I go strictly with a model that is listed in the QVL list?

Thanks

Asrock isn't the only one who maintains a QVL, as they don't test all the modules out there. I usually just go to the memory manufacturer's site, and see if the motherboard is on their QVL.

https://www.gskill.com/en/configurator?manu=52&chip=3396&model=3460

And that RAM isn't on their QVL list, so with it not being on either the motherboard and memory manufacturer's QVL lists, it might work OK, or it might not. If I were facing the same purchase decision, I'd make sure to buy a kit that is listed on at least one of their lists.

i think pcpartpicker shows all DDR4 desktop ram as compatible. i was poking through there the other day and it was showing a geil set while i had a ryzen and b450 board selected. reading the reviews of the geil set, it wasn't working at XMP on ryzen, and geil support on newegg said it wasn't a compatible set.

you either need to go read the reviews on newegg for people reporting that it works on ryzen at XMP speeds, or check the manufacturer's website for QVLs or "ryzen compatible" at the very least

edit: a lot of people on newegg have that set working at XMP values on B450/X470 boards

3200 Mhz RAM that isnt b-die isnt usually on QVL lists for Ryzen because it may or may not work at the rated speed. I was using a 3200 16-18-18 kit on a first gen Ryzen. It wouldnt be stable at all without overvolting, and even at 1.5 V it wasnt 100% stable at 3200 in memory stress tests. The RAM did work perfectly fine with the motherboard, it just needed to be backed off to 2933 to be stable. I have since upgraded to b-die chips which are 3200 Mhz 14-14-14 and they are 100% stable at the XMP voltage and timings. Ryzen APUs and 2nd gen ryzen should each have incremental memory controller improvements, but b-die is still the best to guarantee 3200 Mhz.

If you do have any trouble getting RAM running at rated specs, make sure to update to the latest bios. This can help a lot with the Ryzen boards.

Thanks for the comments everyone!
After reading, I ended up not purchasing that RAM. Last thing I want to have is a system that will not boot up because the RAM is not supported. I have checked some of the RAM that is on the motherboard's QVL list and it is quite expensive. Most of the suggestions on the list are for models that do not go on sale often and are otherwise expensive as well. Additionally, it barely lists any 3200mHz RAM by Corsair and G.skill.
I might end up purchasing 2X4GB instead of the 2x8gb configuration I i was initially planning to get to save some money. The computer will only be used for browsing and Youtube viewing. 8gb might do the trick..

then pick up 1x8 and get a matching or better stick later.

I was considering this option to save some money. However I am afraid that buying a matching stick in one year or so might be problematic if the same model will not be available on the major websites and I will only be able to purchase one on eBay for much higher price...
It was the case for me in the past when I had to do a DDR2 upgrade on an old build.

you can mix and match memory from different makers. just make sure the timings match (or better).

Manual for the motherboard states:
"For dual channel configuration, you always need to install identical (the same brand, speed, size and chip-type) DDR4 DIMM pairs".
I would like to be on the safe side. Will probably wait till the end of the month and see if there might be sales on RAM that is on the QVL list.
