RAM Compatibility Lists...Trust MB Manu. of Ram?

Trying to choose RAM and MB for a Hackintosh where I need max compatibility.

Well, on the Gigabyte site there are less modules listed for most boards then what Crucial is claiming should work. Crucial lists tons...GB a few usually...

Who to trust?

Thanks

I've done a heck of a lot of RAM upgrades, and since I started using Crucial/Kingston RAM I can't remember the last time I encountered a compatibility issue. I tend to go by Crucial's compatibility list (though I've contacted Crucial about the very occasional flaw in it).

Ok, hard to know what's a flaw when they're way off. Gigabyte has like 3 listed as compatible and Crucial a whole slew of them.

The OEMs can't test all RAM out there, there are just too many of them.
If you buy from Crucial, they do guarantee it will work, so go with what Crucial lists, they have tested it.

Are you saying you've tried a load that Crucial say are compatible but they don't work?

Nope, just going by the comparisons between Crucial's site and Gigabytes's site.

Bear in mind who is trying to sell you memory. There's no profit for Gigabyte to spend ages testing lots of different memory modules.

For whiteboxes if you match the RAM speed with the max speed of your CPU and stick within the maximum capacity of your motherboard and use 1.5v (ideally, although 1.35v also works) then you won't have an issue.

I've never bought RAM from the QVL and always matched the specs and it's worked every time.

OEM PC's and laptops can be a lot more fussy though and it's better to use what's recommended if possible.

First off, thanks to all for the help.

Are you saying to buy the fastest, lowest voltage and most RAM my board can take?

I just went with 2x8 Crucial Ballistix Sport, CL9, 1600mhz on a Gigabyte UD3H.

Looks like I goofed by trusting the Microcenter guy. The RAM isn't on either Crucial's or Gigabyte's list.

OMG....more confused then when I started. Looks like the same parts have different or incorrect numbers listed....different model numbers for the kits as well, adding to the confusion.

I have the BLS2CP8G3D1609DS1S00 kit...listed as slightly different on Newegg with "KIT" replacing the "CP" in my model number. Crucial lists these as a CT series...nothing matches on Gigabytes site. Ugghhh....this shouldn't be that hard.

It's not. As long as the specs are within range for the Gigabyte board, you're good to go. The number of boards that have problems with specific memory modules are few and far between and those are usually from boards pushed to extremes.

I get it....it's just that I'm doing a hackintosh so would like to eliminate as many variables as possible...that and I'd just prefer to be compatible. Crucial has a tone of modules listed, so if one isn't on there, I'd tend to think it's possible there's a reason. I'm just trying to determine if the ones I got are indeed on there or not, very hard to tell with the way they have the listings on both GB's and Crucial's sites.

The operating system has no bearing on the memory modules used. The modules listed in the QVL whether it's the mb manufs. or memory maker are those that have been tested/passed. The list says NOTHING about modules that have not been tested. Do not make inferences.

I didn't say the OS has bearing. I said I'd like to eliminate potential problem points that would need to be troubleshot when I'm already going to be dealing with some glitches.

I didn't infer anything. As you said "tested/passed"....I don't know if something's not on the list that means that it failed...this is why I said "it's possible".

Most of the RAM in the QVL lists are never updated.
The Ballistix sport 16GB lvp was one of the better memory kits I have owned.

Stop borrowing trouble, there are no guarantees even if you use a module on the QVL.

Yeah, probably another factor as well. I noticed the Gigabyte list was from 2014. Not sure about Crucial.

LVP is low voltage or low profile? I've got the regular profile and voltage.
