RAM for an E6600

I was wondering what RAM you all think would work better with a heavily Overclocked E6600. I've built my own sub-zero system that should allow for a 450+ FSB. I'm using a P5W DH Deluxe but that and the CPU are the only thing I want to spend a lot on. I only want to spend $150 on RAM (the cheaper the better) but I can go upto $200.
Will timings make a huge difference?
Will it be a big performance difference to have PC2-8000 RAM running at 1:1 as opposed to PC2-6400 running at 5:4 with tighter timings?
Also, if I can get a 1GB Dual Channel kit of PC2-8000 will it do a lot better at these speeds running 1:1 than say a 2GB kit of PC2-5400 running at 3:2? Any thoughts are appreciated, especially about 1GB fast VS 2GB slow.

I'm also very curious about this. I want to be able to hit really high OCs but I don't want to buy more ram than I need -- because of the FSB limitations.

The difference between an E6600 and an E6700 is $200. For $200 more I could buy the best RAM known to man. From what I've seen the E6600 and E6700 OC to about the same speed and are otherwise identical so why should I spend more on it? If I had $200 more to spend I would just get $400 RAM.

Do I need 2GB or will 1GB do fine?

Just doesn't overclock as well. I would just go with the cheaper of the two. With some extra volts I'll bet it can also do DDR2 900 @ 4-4-4-12. I know the other set will hit 1000MHz pretty easy though that's why I suggested it.

The cheaper stuff will still get you 400x9(maybe more) at decent timings and a core 2 @ 3.6GHz isn't exactly bad...

Edit: On the timing side of things...The sweat spot seems to be 4-4-4. Yeah, for gaming you wouldn't notice much of a difference(1-2%~) between 3, 4, or 5 but I wouldn't go any higher than CAS 4. The chips are likely to oc' better when rated at tighter timings.(for the most part)

If you're gonna use this system for games 2GB is what you need.

I noticed that a substantial minority went for the PC2-5400, it is certainly cheaper. Were you thinking I could overclock it rather far as they did in the article (running at PC2-6400 speeds) or that running with a 5:4 or even 3:2 divider wouldn't be bad enough to warrant the spending $50 more?

You want 6400 (DDR2-800), DDR-667 might limit you too much, why not spend the minimal amount more, considering you bought an expensive CPU, mobo and cooling system. It's worth it.

Actually my Cooling system wasn't expensive. It was just really time consuming. I had a water cooling system built off of ebay for about $100 and a friend gave me their old window AC. I just couldn't resist combining them (I'm now alcohol cooled as opposed to water cooled) and now I my Socket 478 3.2 GHz Prescott runs at 4.72 GHz with idle temp. of -22 C. When I get up to MIT this fall I plan to work on getting my E6600 close to -50 C idle. I think you are right about getting the PC2 6400 and seeing how far it will OC. I need the speed but the speed isn't worth getting 1GB instead of 2GB.

I don't know, I was looking at it myself as I have P5W DH Deluxe and plan to OC like no tomorrow.
Some guys on NewEgg:

Pros: Works fine 400MHz 4-4-4-12 with 2 volts in my P5W DH Deluxe
Other Thoughts: Good memory for overclocking Intel systems.

Pros: Asus P5LD2 has no problem to run it. DDR2 800 4-4-4-12 2.0v. Good price but too bad only works on Intel mobo.
Cons: not much headroom to overclock, only reach DDR2 850 4-4-4-12 2.1v

I can't find any reviews and the guy that took it to 850 did it with tight timings so maybe relaxing them to 5-5-5-15 would get a better OC.

For my super overclocked Socket 478 system I use Corsair it has really put out but I can't say how well Corsair handles DDR2. Although, it has worse timings than some cheaper items (same as G. Skill after rebate) it does have a lower stock voltage. It is my impression that the Conroe doesn't care about timings but low timings are generally a good indication that by raising them the chip will overclock more. Likewise, voltage doesn't affect performance but raising the voltage allows you to overclock better and since it starts lower it can be raised more.
Frankly I think that they will probably OC about equally far when set to 5-5-5-15 and 2.2V Thus I'll take the cheaper G. Skill which (while they have some very "value" RAM) does make some very high quality RAM.

That link is broken and I can't find any reviews or reasonable prices of that RAM. Can you point me in the right direction?

I highly recommend those sticks. 667MHz sticks and 800MHz sticks are basically same things.

NewEgg has some "Open Box" RAM that I would like to buy at that price and it's OCZ so it has a lifetime warranty. The big question is, was it returned because it ran like crap? If I buy it do you think I'll just get the normal RAM with a few scratches on the heat spreader or RAM that won't OC worth crap when others have reported running it at 1000 MHz ?

Wow, thank you so much for that link. I will purchase that immediately and since the rebates expire tonight I suggest that everyone interested take a look at that memory. A review at Newegg said it was stable at 1000mhz, it is new with a lifetime warranty and it's 2gb for less than $200 shipped and $130 after rebates. It looks perfect. I would suggest this even for those that can pay $400 for RAM rated to do 1000mhz.

Becareful, according to this REVIEW of 2x512MB version, it is only stable at 880Mhz. So it will totally depend on which batch you get. For $130 AR, it is definitely a great value.
