Ram limitations on p5b Board

I got my p5b deluxe , and I'm ordering vista first week of march. I currently have 2 Gig's of RAM (ddr2-800), and was wondering if I added two more sticks of equal size and speeds for a total of four sticks, would my board have any issues? I remember I couldn't run 4 sticks on my AMD 939 computer, or else it set it to like PC 2700.

I set it to a 1:1 ratio at 3.2 Ghz on my E6400. The ram I currently have does not overclock past like 810, so overclocking past the ratio is not needed.

Thanks for any help,

Rinaun

P.S: The ram I'm adding is the same mode of the 2 gig set I already bought.

As long as the RAM can run the same speeds as your current pair, you should be fine.

32-bit versions of Windows XP or Vista will never see a full 4GB of memory. The mainboard maps memory addresses for hardware into the top addresses of the 4GB allowable memory on a 32-bit system. If you have less memory than 4GB, you don't notice it because it's not using up address space that you need. If you use 4GB, the top bit of the 4GB of memory doesn't have any addresses available, because the mainboard is using them, so that memory space can't be used by the operating system.

Usually you'll get around 3.5GB of memory visible to the OS. Using a 64-bit processor (in 64-bit mode of course) and a 64-bit OS allows you to use a lot more memory, and eliminates this limit.

Other than that, you should be okay, as long as the manual doesn't say "if you use all 4 slots, the speed has to be reduced".

Yup, the slower memory problem is because AMD has an IMC. AMD can't afford to make it quite as beefy because that increases manufacturing costs, but Intel can because their memory controllers are on the NB and apparantly it is much cheaper to put it there. As I understand it, that is the main drawback of the IMC's lower latencies (well, that and some GPU problems created when you're using an IGP, but how often do people on these forums have issues with that )

To the original poster ... did you go ahead & try the 4 GB of RAM? I have a P5B-E and am thinking about doing the same thing.

No problems then. Just stick it in and you're away. Windows XP will only see up to 3.5GB or so but other than that you'll have no worries.

I bought a P5B Deluxe to try out (it arrived yesterday) and I ordered 4GB of the SuperTalent DDR2-667 that should be here tomorrow. I'm using XP Pro for now but I'm pretty sure I'll benefit from the extra 1-1.5 GB. I didn't think I'd make the move to 4GB so soon, but RAM is becoming too cheap not to.

I'm about to do the same. Going to order 2GB more of RAM, a C2D, a P5B board, and new vid care to upgrade my system.

Any particular reason why? All the specs between the two appear to be the same ?
