RAM + Overclocking???

i currently have a 2.4C and a stick of 512 pc2700. i KNOW for a fact that my motherboard can support overclocking...i mean its a gigabyte it even comes with software promoting it. however, i can't even overclock 5mhz with my machine. my cpu cooler is fine, and i dont think its a psu issue...

if i got a stick of pc3200 ram, and replaced my current stick, would i be able to overclock? because i know that if i put it in with my current stick itll only run at 2700. which is better, a gig running at 2700, or one 3200 stick?

You would probably need something along the lines of PC3500-PC3700 to overlcok at a 1:1 ratio. Always take qauntity over qualtity.

P4 cares about latency a lot so if you run at 3:2 or 5:4 ratios you should have no problems

With your 2400mhz C 800FSB (4x 200FSB), your PC3200 is now running 1:1 with your cpu at 200FSB:200mhz ram (400 effective)

Most 2400 get to at least 3000+ mhz => 3000/12 multiplier = 250FSB , which means you need AT LEAST PC4000 ram to run it at 1:1, so use 5:4 ratio to run the ram at its stock speed of 200

ie. 250FSB / 5 * 4 = 200mhz RAM (400 effective)

Of course if your cpu goes above 250FSB then your are going to be overclocking your rAM or have to implement 3:2 ratio.

Remember to enable AGP/PCI lock when overclocking and adjust the CPU voltage as necessary. If overclocking the ram, dont be shy and go to 2.8V for safety.
