RAM prices are just crazy

January 12th 2007 I bought This Corsair RAM at newegg for $276. Granted, there were cheaper kits available at the time for around $210. BUT I thought I was getting a GREAT deal with a -$20 promo code and $50 MIR, so my final cost was $206. Here's my invoice.

NOW!!!, this same RAM is at $130 after MIR. WTF!!!!

I just don't understand it. I can't believe the price has fluctuated this much, in this little of time, without any major technology releases. I can understand my E6600 is going to drop. That was expected. I can understand the price of my 7950GT has dropped, this was also expected. But the RAM??? At half the price in just 3 months. WTF? It isn't Gasoline!

Sorry, I just had to bitch because I think it is a bunch of bull.

/Rant

EDIT: WOW! The price is now back up to $328 and $258 after MIR. But it's still insane that the price is jumping like this. Absolutely crazy that it just doubled back up in price in less than a a few days since my first post.

Ohhh, don't get me wrong, I love the RAM, but I would ENJOY it much much more if I had 4GB for the same freakin price, lol.

Actually, that does make me feel better, lol. But seriously, there has to be a lot of pissed off people. The number of C2D or AM2 builds since Christmas has been huge, and the RAM manufacturers just blatantly raped everyone on prices during the frenzy.

Heh. I had Buyer's remorse one month after I bought my X1800XT at full retail. The prices plummented as an avalanche of X1900XT's hit the market shortly there after.

This isn't a surprise.

If you paid any attention to the RAM market, you woulda known how cheap RAM was last summer, & how it increased in price till around Christmas.

It's the same story as always.
You can wait & wait for cheaper prices, but at some point, you gotta buy.

QFT. I knew the prices were high at the time and I didn't want to wait for them to drop and delay my build.

I love cheese. LOL

I really do enjoy the RAM. I just had to vent because I was pretty pissed when I saw that price drop last night, lol. I feel much better now, and am considering another purchase for 4GB total in my rig

As long as you love the RAM. You can wait and wait until you think the price hits rock bottom and then 4 months later it's even cheaper. It's just the market. Enjoy the RAM.

Yes, but don't tell me you wouldn't be mad to see the price drop to less than half (<$150) only 3 months after you bought it. And as I stated earlier, it didn't drop because of new technology, whereas your GPU and all GPU's constantly decrease in value due to new releases.

I bought a plasma TV when I graduated college a few years ago. It was a 50", not a top tier brand, and cost $4200. Now you can get top tier brand 55" plasmas for ~$1500. How do you think I feel?

Whaa... Whaa... Whaaaa.......

This is how things go in the Computer World. Newer gear is more expensive. If you always want the newest and most powerful gear you pay through the nose for it.

I know how you feel. I bought this same kit (except it wasn't EPP). For $236 - $40 MIR back in January. Today it's $153 - $30 MIR. $83 cheaper without the rebate and $73 cheaper after the rebate (which I've yet to receive). Now that, is painful.

I'm not whining about how expensive new hardware is. You missed the point of my rant. I admit, perhaps I did have too much whining, as I was pretty aggravated and tired at the time I posted. I'm not upset at how much it cost. I was trying to argue that it is simply ridiculous for RAM prices to drop over 50% in a 3 month span. It is unjustified.

All hardware will depreciate. Some of it drops in price fast. But usually there is good reason. CPU's and GPU's are constantly evolving and there's always that next gen on the horizon. So of course, you can expect your hardware to be offered at a lower price in the near future.

But what happened in the RAM market to justify a 50% price drop in 3 months???

I didn't know DDR3 is now readily available and becoming standard in desktop configs

Oversupply and/or lower demand.

DRAM prices have always been very volatile. If it seems expensive at any given time, just wait 3-6 months.

Wait'll you buy a new car! Now that's some serious depreciation, just as soon as you drive it off the lot.
