I just took the plunge and bought a 512 MB DDR RAM chip I needed for my new Shuttle AK35GTR mother board. $160! Man, it is painful to have to pay these prices when I could have gotten it for 33% of the current price only a few months ago. Prices are supposed to go down, not up! Screw that whole supply/demand thing

yeah man I did something really dumb
I sold the sticks of RAM that I had on ebay figuring that prices will go down and this swing was just temporary.
Now I wish I had kept that RAM for myself.

You guys crack me up. From a historical perspective, they're still giving it away.

Yep, you should have tried buying RAM two or three years ago.

In the long run it's a good thing that the manufacturers get a decent profit from RAM. Earlier, they were just about giving it away, there was some SERIOUS over-supply in the market. That ain't healthy in the long run, not for consumers and espesially not for the manufacturers.

I agree with Russ, I can remember upgrading our old Pentium 90 from 8 to 24 MB - took two sticks of 72 pin SIMMS, 8 meg, for $119 each. That was a bargain, then. Don't complain too much, eh?

I'm so disappointed in myself that I didn't see the price increase coming. I should've bought it all when it was announced that the P4 was going to support DDR... Of course demand is going to skyrocket when Intel processors support it, that more than doubles the market... I'm so stupid. :|

Tell me about it. I remember when I upgraded my 486 from 8 megs to 16 megs. it cost something like 600-800fims. Today I could get 256 megs of DDR-RAM with that money!

Russ

Remember the $40/Meg RAM in mid 90s
Arm and leg to outfit a system to support NT 3.1 (8MB - preferably with 16MB)

Hehe, I still have an 8MB, 60NS Fast Page SIMM that I pulled from my 486DX2-66 back in the early '90's. Has the original price tag on it: $349.00. It used to be damned expensive to be a geek.

I was fortunate enough to buy two sticks of crucial 256 DDR when it went for 27 bucks each... I decided to buy when it hit the all time low last year. Lucky me I guess

Oh, I remember the days of ultra-high prices as well. But this still pisses me off because it was so much cheaper such a short time ago. If the prices had never been that low, I wouldn't know what I was missing and would probably be happy to get 512 MB for $160.

In early Dec. I bought 2/256 and 1/512 stick of SDRAM form Crucial with the Anandetch deal $140 shipped. I was going to upgrade the memory in my kids computer and the Intel se440bx won't use the 256 sticks. It will only handle 128 sticks anyone want to trade? I know that last part is in the wrong forum but.............

I bought 1 DIMM of 512MB PC2100 DDR RAM from Crucial two weeks ago for $153 shipped. That includes the 15% Anandtech discount.
