Okay, so I want to make a new computer. However, I don't have the money to get one just yet. I haven't decided between a Pentium or AMD yet. I know RAM is REALLY cheap right now, so I was wondering whether it be a good idea to buy RAM now, since it'll probably another month or two down the road. Would it be a good idea to just buy RAM RIGHT NOW and let it sit there? Or should I wait, risking that the Rambus trial jacks up all the SDRAM prices?Ideally, I would like to buy RAM that would be compatible with my current comp, but I don't think it'll work for my new one when I do. So, whatcha guys think? Buy now or later? BTW, I have a P2/400 & ASUS P2B mobo. Thanks.

Right now the performance edge of DDR or Rambus is only about 5-10%. That may change if new chipsets come out that make better use of the memory, but who knows when that is going to happen. PC133 memory is backward compatible with your mobo. That would probably be a pretty safe bet as long as you don't need to have the absolute latest and greatest. I'm sure there are folks out there who would argue that DDR/Rambus is the wave of the future, but SDRAM is so cheap now that it's hard to resist. Wouldn't set you back so far either if you decided to go with DDR/Rambus for your new mobo. So, I say go for it!

It depends on how often you upgrade, personally I update every 6 months or so. If you plan to hold onto to this combo for over a year, I'd say to go for DDR. However, if you're like me and upgrade constantly, I'd go for regular Ram. For 256 Megs of the Cas 2 Crucial stuff at 89 bucks shipped, I'd say it's a good time to buy regular ole pc133 right now. This way, you can get yourself a Duron or Tbird with a good kt133A chipset and it'll last you at least for a half a year .

If you buy it now you can always sell it later. I don't think prices can go much lowerer, even if they do you're not going to loose too much anyway.
