RAM upgrade questions

Right now I have 4GB on a Q6600 system. I am starting to play around with virtual machines, and I would like to go to 8GB.

I have the ABIT IP35 Pro motherboard. I believe it tops out at 8GB of DDR2. Right now I have 2x2GB OCZ DDR2 800 MHz PC2-6400 (5-4-4-15 @ 2.1v).

The RAM I have now is no longer sold. The timings and voltage requirements appear to be somewhat unique. Most DDR2 currently sold is 1.8v. Is it advisable to add 4GB of RAM with different timings? I'm trying to keep from having to buy a new 8GB and trying to find a buyer for my current 4GB.

That's a much bigger expenditure, making me rethink putting more money into this aging system. Unfortunately these DDR2 prices are just going up every month as far as I can tell.

Even DDR2 prices are cheap these days. 8GBs for $150 shipped is a bargain!
I didn't shed a tear when I paid $309 for 256MBs of memory.

Unfortunately I'm old enough to remember begging for $200 to buy the 256 KB add-on memory module for the Amiga 1000. This inflation-adjusts to about $410 today. At that price-per-KB, our 8GB would be over $12 million.

You are right about avoiding the ballistix. I purchased 8GB of those about four years ago. I've RMA'd all of it at least twice, and the HTPC I currently have it installed in is once again giving me lockups due to memory errors. At the point it's almost not even worth going through the RMA process again.

Anyway. I was able to get 8GB of Corsair XMS at newegg for about $65 shipped. Thanks for your recommendation.

I'm old enough to remember saving up to buy the 500k memory card for the Commodore Amiga A500 ....If memory serves me right it was £200 - £250,can't comment on A1000's (I remember the A1200,was the A1000 the ones with the internal HDD? )

The A1000 was the original, with the little garage underneath for the keyboard to slide into. I'm not an Amiga expert, but I don't think there was an internal HD for it. It still had part of the ROM on floppy (kickstart), so every time I booted I had to insert the kickstart floppy, wait for it to load, then insert the workbench floppy and wait for it to load. ZZZzzzz...

When I got my first computer with a HD (Amiga 500 with an external HD), it booted so quickly and easily, I felt like I was cheating.
