SAN JOSE, Calif., April 24 (Reuters) - A U.S. jury handed computer technology and research company Rambus Inc. (RMBS.O: Quote, Profile, Research) a big legal victory on Monday by finding that South Korea's Hynix Semiconductor Inc. (000660.KS: Quote, Profile, Research) violated patents on memory chip technology.

The jury in the U.S. District Court for Northern California in San Jose ordered Hynix, the second-biggest maker of memory chips in the world, to pay $307 million to Rambus, which developed technology to make such chips run faster.

The jury awarded $30.5 million regarding patents on a type of DRAM computer memory known as SDRAM and $276.4 million on a type known as DDRSD.

Wh yshould this effect us? Didn't all the memory manufactures get in trouble for artificially raising the price on memory? I see it as the extra money they made by screwing the ones who bought the memory at higher prices, can be used to pay for the settlement.

RMBS is garbage. I feel sorry for those PC owners with Rambus memory! I wil never knowingly purchase a product with Rambus memory.

Rambus was to expensive, thats why it died. Now it seems they just sue other companies for income?

And Gagan: I'm not required to buy expensive memory just because you want a motherboard or something. The market wanted cheap memory, rambus didn't offer it.

Good. Let's get rid of this crap DDR junk and move onto some better technology. Rambus has some AWSOME memory they are wroking on and I would REALLY like to see it get out into the market. Video cards should REALLY benefit from it.

I (and every other consumer) will be victorious.

If it's good and cheap I'll get some. If it's not then I won't.

I really don't see what the big deal is.

How Rambus PWNS U

Almost everyone licenses a piece of technology from Rambus. I'm not saying it's good but they own it and you have been using it or will use it.

http://www.rambus.com/products/innovati...icensing/licensingmodel/licensees.aspx

The PlayStation 3's CPU will be a chip codenamed "Cell", and the system will use chip-to-chip interface technology and memory technology from Rambus

http://www.rambus.com/news/pressrelease.aspx?id=104
Rambus Inc. (Nasdaq:RMBS), one of the world?s premier technology licensing companies today announced the signing of a five-year patent license agreement with Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE:AMD) which grants AMD a license to Rambus patents. The license includes Rambus patents used in the design of DDR2, DDR3, FB-DIMM, PCI Express* and XDR? controllers as well as other current and future high-speed memory and logic controller interfaces.

I prefer DDR over rambus. Why? Not sure on performance stuff, but rambus is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. OK rambus might be a bit better than DDR if what you say is correct, but the cost is too high. I'd prefer to have slightly lower performance for a LOT less money. My computer takes on most anything without breaking a sweat anyway, DDR certainly isn't slow stuff.

stop trolling Furbal. If you knew anything Rambus has some of the best technology but unlike ddr doesn't have the mass money to produce it.

When it comes to performance ther is no competition, rambus 800 is 800MHZ, not /8. You don't understand how technilogically advanced this stuff really is.

When it gets proper backing it will be osmething to look out for, and I have my money on Conroe supporting it by Intel via another board for Enthusiasts who'e wnate dthe ram so bad

Lol, you sound crazy.

Rambus back in the day lost out for two reasons...
1. It was super expensive. That was mostly due to price fixing I suppose.
2. At the time it was available, the Athlon platform with DDR was faster than Pentium 4's with Rambus and far cheaper. And AMD had no reason to use rambus because it was much higher latency and the Athlon cpus could not make use of the extra bandwidth anyway.

No hes right on the ball with his statement. The comperably priced Athlon could kill the P4 with RD-RAM.
