Will they survive?

how to shake that cheap $0.10/package image that most people associate with it from college?

they must shake that image in order to charge $14.95 for that cheap $0.10 package

You ask this question as if places that specialize in ramen aren't already thriving.

Ramen shops reached critical mass in LA this year. The weak will die off.

LOL, survive? You have no idea how well ramen joints are doing across the country, obviously. Ramen mecca in the US is LA and the competition is stiff there with new places opening all the time. Just yesterday, Johnny King Noodles in Detroit (ramen in Detroit!) opened and I think they would do well against LA competition. Possibly top 10 for their first attempt. Meanwhile, NYC is starting to catch up as well with Ippudo, Sanshiro, Takashi, etc.

Survive, LOL. Your reasoning is like saying that people won't pay more than $2 for a burger because that's how much it costs at McD's.

The fact they are charging 15 dollars for ramen is a problem. Even when I was in Japan ramen was not 15 dollars for a bowl.

Depends on where you live at, there's not one anywhere close to me, and I doubt that one could make it. As I see it Ramen places are fads that are only even fads in very certain areas.

You should try real pork belly ramen...it's like comparing a ribeye to a cheeseburger at McDonald's.

LOL I actually paid $18 or was it $24 I don't remember for DK's Crab Truffle Ramen at Sansai Sushi in Hawaii.

You cannot compare supermarket ramen containing cheap noodles and MSG laden spice packets with restaurant ramen (and pho) prepared with quality noodles, fresh vegetables, whole meat and bones simmered for hours to create a broth - real food.

Just the bone broth alone is among the healthiest things you can eat.

I haven't been to a ramen place in probably a year because I don't eat noodles anymore, but the last time I went it was around $8-9 for a large. Sure you can add extra chashu, extra egg, etc, but that was usually just an extra dollar or two each. I always add karage and a coke, and thats usually around $15.

I haven't seen ramen catch on here, but Toronto doesn't have a big enough Japanese population to really give it the initial push. Pho is huge though.

Obviously they're favorable areas, but after living in the SF bay area and Manhattan - if you can make a decent bowl of ramen, you'll have lines out the door.

Handmade noodles, pork broth that's been boiling for days, pork belly that's been seared with a blowtorch, and so on. Price even isn't as bad as a high end burger ($20 for a burger at The Spotted Pig last weekend) compared to a 99 cent cheesburger at McDonalds. It's a similar comparison.

I will say however, there are a lot of shitty ramen places as well where you might as well have made your own 99 cent package.

I want to ask Mongrel where he gets his nuclear bomb exploding pictures. Every thread from Jedi deserves to be nuked.

The ramen I get looks like this, or similar

and it's damn good stuff. About 10 bucks.

A quick google search tells me you don't eat out very often.

Big difference between the downtown core and the rest of the Greater Toronto Area. There's only one ramen place in the entire west end, where I live. There's dozens of Pho places though.

Personally I've never tried high end ramen, if I'm going that route I just get like drunken noodles or something from this place.

I like my drunken noodles with Shrimp on high heat though.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

One for the Duck for the other thread, though not Peking.

No such thing as "good" ramen. When I hear people sing the praises of "good" ramen it's really just a bowl of chicken/shrimp/egg/seasonings/ and vegetables that just has some ramen noodles tucked in around the sides for good measure. At that point it's not even the ramen you're enjoying.
