Hi guys,

I have problems with the NB temps since I put together this system and I asked for some opinions here previously. Basically the temps are starting at 45c immediately after I boot into Windows and they grow to ~52c within several hours as reported by Pc Probe.

I did some research and I understood that a fan might be good to cool the NB heat sink and/or I might need to re-apply thermal paste on the heat sink. My system was previously in a Vento 3600 case and I had a small fan cooling the NB(fixed on the upper video card(don't know how smart that was)) but the temps were the same. By default the warning threshold for the NB temp on PC Probe is set to 45c and since that's the starting point for me...

I changed the case eventually with a Gigabyte one (570 or so) and removed the fan from the NB, added instead three 120 mm fans on the removable side of the case, the NB temps seem to be the same however. It doesn't matter if I ran at stock or at 8x440 the NB temps are nearly the same, always higher than 47c.

I tried to find some directions about the optimal NB temps on this board on the net and to my shame I couldn't, I did find a topic in another forum where they were discussing the issue and that's where I got the thermal paste replacing thing, but I can't seem to find anything on the official website/manuals/reviews.

It seems that I should keep the temps below 45c if I want to have the board for a little while and I should probably apply the thermal paste.

My question is if I have some other options as well to decrease the temp since I've never done this before and I would appreciate some directions on how to do this properly.

TIA

Hi,

I am in Brazil and it is Summer down here. So my NB temps goes around 47-51C.
I did not make any changes, but I heard changing the thermal paste of the NB improves and it gets cooler.
But I think having a fan blowing over the memories and NB will help a lot.

The NB is @ 56c right now and I just booted into Windows about 1 hour back.

I'll have to do both I suppose, the thermal paste and the small fan. The voltage is @ 1,36 in Bios for the NB, so obviously there's something wrong with the heat dissipation.

Thanks for the reply Rafael.

You are welcome Drivenbyvoltage!

But I think the temp is very dependent on the case you are using, ambient temp, etc.
And I am pretty sure that this is the hottest chipset I have ran.
But my chipset does reach high temps like yours sometimes when it is on load, playing games or benching.

And remember that you have 2 4870 running inside your case, I bet you that they put out a lot of heat and it will stress more the NB. And if you are OCing your system, that will count too.

I only have a X1950Pro.

Yeah, I found some more temp problems on the Tom's Hardware and apparently the temps on the NB are between 47-58c for most of them out there.
I'll try to sort it out during the week-end and see if anything changes.
Thanks again!

How did you fix them? The last time I tried, I had to keep the fan on the first GPU and wasn't comfortable with the "setup".

Hi, i'm having the same mobo and my temps are also 45-56 degrees. Contacted (asus, distributor) and none of them said it was a problem. I'm running this board for a year and its' fine.

Same, it runs around 55C, @ 1.42v. No stability problems, so I won't bother with cooling

You know that's a bit funny. I'm sure they know what they're saying, then again the PC Probe is their own software to my knowledge and it starts with relatively low threshold defaults on the NB,SB and MB temps. Maybe they should start considering releasing the software as per the hardware used and not the other way around.

Personally I don't like having high temps on anything. I'm willing to accept a higher noise level rather than having hot air flowing through the case. I haven't experienced stability problems myself also but I'm still considering pushing the OC higher than the 456 FSB I already reached whilst keeping the rig on air cooling.

Edit: BTW I get 56-58c under load @ 1,29v dor the NB in Bios with the GTL @ 0,65x as I recall.

Sorry it took me so long but here are the pics. also another advice is to remove the sticker on top of the SB. That way the air could move freely through it.

Nice work  . Actually I'll try exactly the same thing. And thanks for the heads up abt the sticker on the SB, I read abt it before but completely forgot about it.

Once again thank you!

Update: I didn't have time to get the fans yet, I did however manage to fix the small fan that comes with the board, on the sound card and the temp is now at 44c after 2,5 hrs of usage(mostly browsing but with prime small fft's in the background for abt 1 hr). Not bad since it was like 53c before.

I'm definitely going for the 40mm ones, as soon as my work will allow me. Thx a lot footballrunner800!!!!!!

Nice to see that there're nice solutions, i will try it myself.
I'm thinking of removing the original cooling and install aftermarket cooling solutions, or is this a bit too much

Try the fan/s before anything else. Replacing the TIM seems a little bit extreme and it could be worse if you don't know how to do it.

I switched cases now, haha, now with Fans on low (case is so quiet ;D), my NB is burning up, so I'll probably end up putting a 40mm on my NB. I wonder what size screws he used to push that on there.
