Rampage III Formula..That did not last long

Well my Rampage III Formula is now bad.:\ I used it for about ten days before it decided to malfunction. Last night I decided to try my SSD on the Marvel SATA port so I shut it down and moved the SATA cable from the standard SATA port to the Marvel port. That's all I did (besides enabling it in the BIOS). I have no idea why I did not install it that way in the first place. So at first the board would not boot. Weird. Why would changing to the Marvel port cause the machine to not boot? Then when it finally booted it booted without any of the overclock settings I had previously used. Weird again. But it would not boot past the Marvel detection phase. So I shut it down and connected everything back up the way it was before. Now the board boots really slowly and the NIC is dead. The SSD boots crazy. When Win7 loads the four colors that make up the Win7 flag they boot like they are in slow motion. At some point they finish and boot all the way. Feels like a short but the NIC and Marel SATA ports are definetly dead. Tried the obvious, new SSD, new network cable to a new port on the switch. No joy. NewEgg is sending a replacement. I guess I could have caused this with a static shock but I don't recall anything like that happening. Plus I was nowhere near the NIC. Anyway thought everyone might like to know. I will post when I receive the new board. Sigh...

The standard port is correct. There is no need for the other as you aren't doing raid. Then all you simply have to do is enable AHCI in the bios for the ssd drive and you are set.

But sounds like something happened to the board though. Hopefully the new one will sort it out though.

Killer K, sorry to have to correct you but the Marvel port does not support RAID. The Marel port is for SATA 6.0 GBs. It can also be used for SATA 3.0 GBs connections.

After my problems with ram and this board, I'm done with it personally. I've tried 3 different brands of ram in 2 of these boards and cannot get it to post at 1600mhz.

Got a p6x58d coming today, and this one has a prepaid UPS return label ready to take a trip back to amazon. If the p6x58d-e gives me any crap like this board I'll go back to an evga ftw3 which has given me ZERO problems.

I was able to get the Rampage III Formula to post at 1600 no problems. I am using Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 2000 memory. The P6X58D should be a great and reliable board for you. Hope it works out for you.

one of the problem ram modules was a 6gb set 1600 dominator gt, 7-7-7.. tried exchanging the ram for a new set , same thing, swapped the boards too. bah.

Are the modules you were trying on the approved memory list?

not entirely sure, but let's see the dominator gt (board wouldn't post with xmp1 1600 loaded), mushkin blackline 6gb it would only 'see' some 4gb (2 modules), and 12gb of corsair (6 2gb modules 888 1600) wouldn't let it post at anything over 1333.

I bought the damn board to enjoy using and to game with, not kiss it's ass with memory until I find one it likes. Not that long ago memory of a certain speed was just that; I don't remember ever having as much trouble with a board and memory as this pile. That's at least 3 bios revisions that none of these work with 802, 901 and 1005.

I go back to a 286-16 CompuAdd, so I've been around the block a few times now.

Are we talking about the same board? The Rampage III Formula does not have bios revisions numbered 802, 901 or 1005. Are you sure it's not another board you are upset with. I think the RIII Formula was using 402.

oh hell no, I am ranting about the rampage iii extreme, I missed the formula part. Anyway, I did check the qvl and it doesn't look like it's been updated for a while a lot of those #'s are deactivated in newegg.

anyway I'll go back in my corner lol.

I like the board. I am hoping that the new one that is coming tomorrow will be the keeper. I'll let you know after the weekend how it plays out. This had to be the result of something I did. I messed with it and after that it was hosed. It probably wasn't the board.

ha! Arrived about 615pm, installed, fired it up, went into the bios set a few things..

saved and exited, it shut off and won't come back on. The power button is still illuminated however on the board itself.

sweet eh?

Yes I've tried clearing the cmos, pulling the battery etc, at least I still have the r3e and didn't send it back this afternoon like I was going to.

When i had the rampage extreme it dectected 1066 mhz but you have to change it yourself in bios to have it read at 1600mhz. Also try updatibg software.

Feel free to come over and troubleshoot it then. I've been using Asus boards on and off for probably at least 15 years with very good luck, these last 2 I'm not sure what is up. Well, the R3E is just finicky as hell about memory, just like the P6T was for a lot of people and this one is just a DOA I believe.

I've tried 3 different BIOS revisions and yes, I've tried both XMP1 profile and setting things manually at 1600. She no wanna play with the Dominator GT 1600 6gb 777's

Okay so the new Rampage III Formula came in today. I installed in in a new case (I was going to do that before the thing crapped out) and everything works as it should. The Marvell SATA ports which did not work on the original work just fine on this one. Unfortunately I did not have my OC settings recorded so I have to start over but I did get her to 4.0 without any real trouble very quickly. I hope to get it up to 4.2 and stable by the end of the weekend.

I got my Silver Arrow today as well. I did not install it yet. Wow!! This thing is huge!! I'll probably install it over the weekend. I wanted to check my temps with the Venomous first so I can compare them to the Silver Arrow when it's installed. I think the Silver Arrow and the Venomous X share the same mounting hardware so installation should be fairly straightforward.

its a very impressive board much better than the extreme for me. The temp on idle is reasonable.

What speed have you achieved on OC and what are your temps? I am at 4.1GHz and idle at 45C.
