Rand Paul raising funds for KY senate race

What went from a "maybe I'll run" to a confirmed running for an upcoming open (in 2010) senator seat from Sen. Bunning is resonating with a lot of people. It's interesting to watch a private citizen run for such a high position. I wish him well.

It's an interesting story to follow no matter your affiliation.

Please, a single senator doesn't have much power and he's running against a very competent and franky damned good opponent in the primaries. I'd be happy with either Trey Greyson or Paul who are the front runners in the primary.

Despite the internet money he's bound to get -- and this $680,000 is definitely just the beginning -- I actually don't think he gives the Republicans a better shot at beating Mongiardo.

Running for political office unfortunately does require such large amounts of cash. The federal government has already spent far more than four million dollars in the name of "freedom", without much to show for it.

I think he wants to distance himself from modern Republicans and that is definitely a good thing. The modern Republican party isn't conservative about anything except social issues; modern Republicans are happy to authorize huge spending and rights abuses when it suits them, such as the Patriot Act and the Iraq War. There are those true conservatives who want a fiscally conservative government that doesn't act as the world's policeman and doesn't suspend constitutional rights on a whim. Ron/Rand Paul are those people.

They're not Republicans, they're Libertarians. Frankly, Republicans were never what you described save for maybe a brief moment in history. What you're describing is a far-right, fringe ideology where international isolationism and little to no gov't are its top two policy platforms. That platform doesn't win elections, both Pauls know it, which is why they run as Republicans even though they aren't anything of the sort.

Perhaps the GOP should split into two distinct parties: 1.) Libertarians, 2.) Socially-Conservative Sarah Palin-worshipers? I'm a much bigger fan of the former, than the latter. As are most sensible folks.
