random crashes in xp

I dont know if you had any OSs installed on that machine before, but a lot of crashes are also hardware related.

"Crashes" hmm....does it give you a blue screen? Physical mem dump? any more info? Does it just turn off your computer instantly? Do you have all the updates installed? etc, etc....

ok, well this is a duron 750, gigabyte mobo, 128mb pc100, radeon se 64 vivo, sb16 ISA and 2 generic nics...
ive been runnign this setup for ages under winME with a viper2 instead of radeon cuz viper dont work at all for games in winXP.

since ive installed winXP, officeXP and IE6, most times i do the web stuff mentioned above the app will just freeze and stop responding. this happened ONCE when running winamp and using the black and white bear dance plugin (but i havent managed to recreate this error) and every now and then Counter-Strike just freezes and theres nothing i can do but reboot. im running counter-strike in compatibility mode for winME cuz if i run in xp mode i get random crashes but i guess im digressing now and the main issue is the web browsing!

ok, well i havent installed officeXP sp1 but IE6 isnt even listed as part of officeXP so that should hardly be relevant.

any ideas? i have a 256k adsl connection if thats relevant... plz help!!!

well dude, these things happen. Many things to try, but if I were you, I'd format my hard drive and reinstall windows. If you still get weird crashes, then you know it's hardware related. - either defective hardware, or the winXP drivers for said hardware are crappy.

hmmm i was hoping for someone who had similar issues but thx neways... and i just formatted before i installed xp so tehres no way im reformatting! im gonna change my crap sound card soon ..maybe thats it..(unlikely)

Although I doubt it because you've only been having crashes in XP, it could be a failing stick of memory. I had random crashes in XP as well, ran Memtest, then replaced the bad stick and everything was smooth and stable after that.

Sounds like you could be having the "Infinite Loop" bug, which affects Windows XP (and rarely also Windows 2000) users. It appears to be related to DirectX 8 and the NT kernel. Try getting the latest VIA 4in1s (if you happen to have a VIA chipset on that board), and/or replacing that video card temporarily with an old one (I used a Rage Pro Turbo PCI when troubleshooting a similar problem on my Duron system), and see if that helps any.
