Random DIY server questions

Okay I'm several months removed from the fire in a new job and it's time to build "Duece Duece". DD will originally be a linux desktop so I can ship the loaner computer I'm using to my friend in New York. Thing is I'm not sure what exactly to build in light of the path I've chosen. Now I'm quite aware that many of these questions are dependent on the usage of the server so I'll tell you that in addition to sitting behind a homebuilt firewall (thank you neighbors for throwing out that old computer):

-box will serve as my personal test box and serve an internal intranet from which I'll build various applications and learn random bleeding edge techs in addition to being a production server for my apps
-media file server for the files I download and create
-repository for my super secret need a password to access music torrent site for my friends(I'm on a DSL connection so I think this is completely legal...traffic will be low so I'm not worried, especially with the torrent being private)
-if I get really endeavorous, lan server so I can throw lan parties.

So now that you know that....

desktop or server motherboard?

AMD or Intel? (I keed I keed...not trying to start a flame war)

One or two procs?

If one proc, what about the Asus P5P800-VM? (no pci-e but with macs going intel proc soon I'll be cool especially since this will be a server in the long run)

If two procs, what board?

Max out the RAM?

Hard Drive size? Configuration? (intially just to get the loaner back to my friend I'm going cheap so probably a 40g to start)

That's pretty much it. The only other pre-req I have would be DVI out because both a flat screen monitor and television are in my future and such.

Thanks a bunch.

As for budget I'm thinking 250 per piece range i.e. 250 for the board, 250 for ram, 250 for harddrive (and controller if needed).

Doesnt sound like it requires high power. Get AM2-X2 or Conroe, with Conroe being better. If you're going Conroe use the Intel 965 board, its cheap and stable.

Asus NCCH-DL
Dual 1.6LV or 2.4LV Xeons
2GB of ram
PCI-X controller, flavour of your choice(SCSI, SATA, IDE)
Drives of the above flavour.
Ghetto cheap AGP card that has DVI.
Some ATX case with a quality PSU
