Random instant fails and reboots???!?

Hey. About a week ago I started getting random reboots. The screen would just cut out with a click, and suddenly the machine was booting up again. This is totally random, and it's happening more and more often, about once an hour. It has no correlation with any specific program or task, but it usually happens right after I click on something. It doesn't matter what it is, but just as the machine does its task I get a random reboot. Is this a memory fail? Some other kind of problem? I don't recall installing anything or any driver in the week before it started. I updated to the Via XP betas since, but that has made no difference. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Is this a hardware fail problem? (That's why I put it in this one). Thanks for all help.

Yeah. I didn't get any direct help from those, but I do see this is a recurring problem, only with WinXP/2000. We'll see. Thanks.

KT7A's have been known to have problems with some sound cards including the SB Live! series. Try removing it and see if the crashing stops.

Unfortunately, the SB! Live 5.1 is a big red flag ... not the card, but the fact that you're using a KT7A -- plagued with the infamously buggy VIA 686B south bridge. Try removing the card first, and uninstalling all the drivers and junk. See if your problems go away.

Ah. I've had many problems with that combo, but I doubt this is in it. Those were lock up problems, followed by reboots 10 seconds later. These were solved by updated drivers, and that was an OS ago. I've kept consistant drivers, so I think I'm OK for now, but I'll may chop that out later. Thanks.

i use to have the same problem with my TNT video card, i tried just about every new detonator release and it would randomly crash, even the newest XP detonator. Killed those drivers, went back to detonator 5.0 and problems gone. came to the conclusion that that card does not like any detonator release above 5.0.
