CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2600+
RAM: 1GB (pc2700)
Video: ATI Radeon x800 Pro
Sound: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
Harddrive: 80GB Maxtor
PSU: 450w Allied
Disk Drive: Standard CDRW 48x24x48.

again if i missed anything please let me know, and thank you for your time.

Windows makes a dump file whenever you have a serious error. The dump file is pretty much worthless to you and me so I usually disable that feature.

Windows has another feature that automatically forces a reboot on a serious error. The problem with that is that is there is an error message displayed, you won't see it because Windows will reboot before it's visible. To disable this annoying "feature" right click My Computer, click on Advanced tab, then click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery. Under System Failure uncheck "Automatically Restart" and while you're at it change "Write Debugging Information" to None (this disables the dump).

Now, if you're lucky, the next time the error occurs you may see an error message that will give you some clue as to the problem.

Random reboots can be caused by a variety of things: overheating, bad drivers, misbehaved background apps, IRQ conflicts. I would recommend you pull ALL your cards except the video card and see if that eliminates the problem. If it does, the re-install each card ONE BY ONE and test. If you find the culprit, move it to a different slot.

Hope this helps...

I was recently having spontaneous reboot problems also. I checked my CPU temp, and it was around 60C. I took off my CPU heatsink/fan, cleaned them up and reapplied thermal grease. Now my CPU temp runs in the low 40s, and my computer has't had problems since.

I would recommend searching this forum for "sudden reboot" or "spontaneous reboot", there are a bunch of threads with good replies about what could be the problem and how to fix it, like bad memory, bad psu, or overheating.

Good luck!

I had the same problem once with faulty ram. If the system is new I suggest running a memory tester.

Right on! I always disable the dmp files, waste of time and hard drive space.

Alright, well i disabled the automatic restart, and the write debugging information, and i got the blue screen of death with some information that i didnt really understand (even after googleing it). it said:

***Stop 0x0000000a (0x011b88c5, 0x0000001c, 0x00000000, 0x80063b96)
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
***Address 80063b96 base at 80062000, datestamp 3e7a7338 - hal.dll
Troubleshooting Stop Errors.

what does this mean? that the hal.dll file is causing the problem? any ideas on how to resolve this?
