OK, I'm about to give up on this computer. I don't know what its problem is anymore. It's always had problems with random lockups, but now, it's just rebooting out of nowhere. I leave it sit over night doing absolutely nothing, i wake up and come out, and it's at the login screen. it's an xp2800, 512MB DDR, asus a7v8x, 2x 120GB WD, 1x 120GB seagate, cd burner, 500watt PSU, radeon9700 pro. i'm running the latest video drivers, latest patches & latest via drivers. yet, the thing still reboots. even after a fresh install of xp professional. before it would just lockup and i'd have to reboot it myself, that was deteremined to be one of the harddrives. i replaced the main OS drive and i haven't had any lockup issues, now i just have random reboots. i'm afraid to even play a game on my desktop now. now, i'm getting sick and tired of replacing every piece of hardware only to find out that it's something else. i was running with an xp2400, but i was getting problems, so i threw in a brand new 2800. my processor runs in high to mid 40s in terms of heat. the only thing i could possibly think of is either bad ram, bad motherboard or bad video card. what do you guys think it is? i don't want to spend $400 on a new video card and it really be the motherboard, or spend $100 on a motherboard and it be the ram, etc. any help or suggestions would be appreciated. oh, and in event viewer, i have an error in my system log that says for the source of it, it is "sbp2port", doesn't give any information on it.

thanks

The driver SBP2PORT is the device driver for the IEEE 1394
(Firewire) port driver.

Do you have any devices hooked up to it? (External drives, Camera, etc..)

This issue was fixed with SP1.

yeah, i have my external dvd burner & external cd burner hooked up via a PCI firewire card. would that cause my pc to just randomly reboot?

If you are not running SP1 you can almost guarantee it.

If you are running SP1, you need to look at the Burning software
as suspect in causing the error.

i'm running SP1 and have all the critical updates. for the burning software though, after my fresh install and updates of XP, i haven't even had a chance to install any burning software on it. it was just sitting idle last night, i come out this morning and it's at the login screen. went into event viewer and got that error about the sbp2port error.

yes i do. also, i swapped out my 52x buslink cd-rw for my 44x yamaha cd-rw. could that have anything to do with it? when i was putting in the new harddrive (which solved the lockup problem), i went ahead and put in my yamaha burner.

Run Memtest86 to check for memory erros. What brand of power supply is that? You need a good quality power supply for your setup. I would rather have an Antec 350w power supply instead of a generic 500w power supply. I'm voting for power supply.

it's a 500watt raidmax with 550watt peak. i ran memtest on the memory already as well as burn-in test. can't mess with the pc right now. can't even access it remotely. i set it to show me the lovely BSOD message when it f's up instead of just rebooting. so i get to check that when i get home now.

Dude, no offense to you but raidmax power supplies suck. Replace that with an Antec or Enermax.

i know 100% that this problem has NOTHING to do with my PSU. i have a 430watt antec (well, my buddy does) and i popped it in over night, and i still got the same issues. this is the error that i keep getting in the event viewer and what it gives me when i get BSOD: ER_KRNLCRASH_LOG, Error code %1, parameter1 %2, parameter2 %3, parameter3 %4, parameter4 %5. i've been taking stuff out one by one, so far no luck. i've taken out my firewire card & my sound card. pretty soon i'll be out of stuff to take out. anybody have any suggestions yet? i updated to SP2 and that didn't do diddly.

i've done a chkdsk /F and /r. i've reinstalled windows 4 times in a week, trying different driver combinations and taking hardware out, yada yada. still get the same exact thing. the reboots occur sooner than before now though. before it'd go about 8 hours or so, now it's happening after like 2 hours.

still doing it's little thing. although sometimes now it gives a box that says 'unknown error' and lets you click ok. you can click ok all the time and it won't do anything but give you the error again. i swapped out my 512MB stick of ram and popped in a 128MB that i had just laying around. that was a no-go. it did stay up longer than 2 hours this time though. i got a whopping 5 hours out of it. i'm running out of things to try. anybody have any other suggestions yet? i'm going to try swappong out my radeon9700 and putting something old in there. if it still does it, i'm going to try a PCI graphics card. hopefully if it IS my radeon, ati will take it back. it's only like a year and change old.

well, you've basically narrowed it down to a mobo or HDD problem. have you tried a reformat? PSU was my fist thought, but i guess thats not it. i somehow doubt that the radeon would cause the reboots. i had the same problam as you on one box i built...random reboots. 3 days later, a huge capacator in the PSu literally blew up.

Have you tried taking everything out and running a clean install with just mem, video, hd, cd, ect. Just essentials?

yeah, i've taken things out piece by piece. been doing this for like half the week. only thing i haven't tried to replace is the video card and mobo. i was told to buy a POST card and see if that can narrow down the problem. since i declocked my processor, it's been staying up longer now. i don't think it's my processor at all, the xp2800 is brand new and it was doing it with my xp2400 that i had before it. not nearly as frequent, maybe a few days if that. i'm thinking it's the mobo, if it is, i'm just going to buy an a64 3200 and mobo and be done with it.

no idea if you would have access to the stuff to do this, but try swapping out your mobo for another. unless it is a conflict between your current mobo and a piece of hardware, this should tell you if you have faulty hardware. if this fixes the problem i would say most likely your problem is with the mobo.

if you dont have an extra mobo lying around, maybe you could get one from someplace w/ a good return policy... for example from what i hear and have read on newegg, you may be able to just buy a new mobo and return it w/in 30 days for a refund-no problem. you may want to look into it a little more to make sure, but thats my suggestion.

well, it looks like the motherboard was the culpret. over the weekend, i kept getting errors, so i took everything out, including the cpu off the board, then put it all back in. the pc powered up, but it would just hang at my asus splash screen. i rebooted it, hit DEL to get into the bios, after about 5-10 seconds of being in the bios, it'd just freeze. so i reseating everything, even the cpu, and then it wouldn't even post. it would just sit at a blank screen. everything turns on, but i see nothing. so i put in an xp1700, a different video card and a known good stick of ram. still wouldn't post. so i just ordered an a7n8x board. a7n8x-e or something. nomore VIA chipset based boards for me. my last 3 or 4 boards have been VIA and have all had roughly the same problems.

if asus won't let me RMA it, sure. it's less than a year old (which is kinda sad seeing how it failed already), and mobos have 3 year warrenties. so we'll see what they have to say.
