Question Random Shutdowns

My son's computer is randomly shutting down. This isn't exactly a building issue, it's a troubleshooting issue, but it's pretty likely a hardware issue, as it happens without warning, sometimes even in BIOS/UEFI. It was just happening in Elden Ring, but now it's happening all the time. I can't get it to stay up long enough to monitor temps in Windows. BIOS is reporting high-not-crazy temps (~70C.)

It just shuts down. I'm looking for hypotheses that might help me trouble shoot. Hypotheses that don't involve spending money appreciated. Moderate to another forum if there's a better one than this. (Spec below is approximate. My old system, his current one.)

70C in BIOS? That seems high. What are the system specs, assuming it's not the one listed in your signature?

My first thought is to re-paste the cooler. Make sure the BIOS is up to date. Then we can start testing other components perhaps. Also, you can set a program like HWInfo64 to start at login so you can try to see temps and other info.

I second In2Photos suggestion. 70*C in BIOS is not normal. Modern motherboards put a light load on the CPU while in BIOS for exactly this type of situation. To expose potential cooling issues. From my experience, 40-50*C while in BIOS is closer to normal.

If you are using an air cooler, check that the fan is still working. If using an AIO water cooler, check that the pump is still working (the tubes should vibrate a little as the water flows through them), and that the fans on the radiator are spinning.

Re-paste and re-mount regardless of the kind of cooler you have.
