Baseball: 160-170 games a year
Basketball: 80 games a year
Football: 16 games a year

Compare per game salary and things match up pretty well...if not better. Plus there's much greater ticket sales, concession sales, and television broadcasts with that many games being played.
don't forget there are 50 players on a team, twice as many as baseball. The NFL is the richest and more profitable sport by a long ways, if players were grossly underpaid we'd be hearing about it. If the lineman making 500k a year isn't complaining, why should you?

I understand why he did it, but that doesn't make it acceptable. Two wrongs now make a right? Is this only for athelets making millions of $$s?

Why do these moron's make so much while school teachers struggle on their 25k/yr salary. Its disgusting.

i hate to break it to you but its about a billion times easier to become a teacher than it is to become a professional football player.

teachers to to school for 4 years in college then maybe 1 or 2 to get a masters. athletes are developing their skills from when they are probably 4-5 years old until they hit the pros (around 22 years old or so, considering college was an option). that is almost 20 years they are working on their skills to become a professional athlete, against a teachers 4 - 6 years of school or so. and athletes who love a sport don't take summers off from sports or get winter breaks where they don't play. they do it because they love to and do it year round.

not to mention, there is a little more competition in the professional sports world than there is in the teaching profession.

i think professional athletes deserve the $$ they make.

Minnesota's controversial wide receiver was fined $10,000
Thursday by the NFL for pretending to pull down his pants and moon
the Green Bay crowd during a playoff win last weekend.
"Ain't nothing but 10 grand. What's 10 grand, to me?" said
Moss, whose salary this season is $5.75 million. He then jokingly
suggested he might perform a more vulgar celebration next time.

KARE-TV of Minneapolis recorded the exchange between Moss and reporters outside the Vikings' practice facility.

Reporter: "Write the check yet, Randy?
Moss: "When you're rich you don't write checks."
Reporter: "If you don't write checks, how do you pay these guys?"
Moss: "Straight cash, homey."
Reporter: "Randy, are you upset about the fine?"
Moss: "No, cause it ain't [expletive]. Ain't nothing but 10 grand. What's 10 grand to me? Ain't [expletive] Next time I might shake my [expletive]."

Him and his fellow Minnesota Athlete Latrel Sprewell would get along pretty good.

Hahaha, that's hilarious and true at the same time. Randy is a pimp.

I'm not saying what Randy Moss did was right, but I think all of us at one point or another has tried to fake moon somebody. It probably wasn't 60000 fans of the opponent but still, what's the big deal? Everyone's flipping out over a joke, imo. His response to the fines, however, were uncalled for. Just pay the fine and shut your trap. My guess is since he felt what he did was no big deal, that if the league were fine him, he's gonna retaliate. I'll bet you if my psych professor were to stand up today during class and fake moon everybody, all he'll get is a lot of laughs and maybe even some claps. So if it's no big deal for the average guy to do it, why is it such a big deal if randy moss were to do it?? Tony Dungy said that Packer fans really moon the opponents bus if the packers win. So it's okay for 100 drunk fat white men to moon the players but it's not ok for the players to FAKE moon them back?? I don't get the logic here

Instead of spouting off this great statistic, why don't you explain to me how it has any relevance. Football WOULD play more games in a year if they could, but it's too taxing. Think about how many season-ending injuries there are in the NBA and MLB compared to the NFL. If you played 2 NFL games a week for an extra month, you'd have 40 games in a season (and 2 bye weeks). Most of your players would be on IR by the time playoffs rolled around.

The important statistic is money per year.

yea dude i agree. you cant even compare baseball to football. baseball is about as physical as ballet is. you dont even have to be in shape to play baseball. i see fatties on the bases all the time. not to mention, some games the players don't even break sweats.

football seasons are shorter because of the physicallity of the sport and the risks. not to mention it is a lot more physically draining than the average baseball game.

and now with the way the NBA is, with the lazy players walking down the court and not even following up their own shots, they hardly give it their all.

Like someone else said it on the other thread, it makes no sense that he gets fined $10k and another player who roughed up a QB gets fined less. Well, it does, cuz NFL is all about image, but still....

The NFL likes to fine players because it generates more revenue for them, creates a news story for free advertisements, and starts threads like this one on ATOT.

Personally, I wish they'd just let players celebrate however the heck they want as long as it doesn't take more than 25 seconds.

It's not about two wrongs making a right. If he was just mooning them because he wanted to insult those fans, that would be a little reprehensible. But when they moon you nearly every time you come to town, then you moon them back, it's acceptible.

Here's the important thing to understand: if they're mooning you, then they can't really be offended by being mooned, can they? Cursing isn't a big deal at all if you're around me, but it would be rude to just start cursing around my grandmother. Why? Because I curse a lot and I don't care if you curse around me. Same thing here. Plus, he's not just outright trying to taunt fans whose team he's beating, he's specifically responding to a particular thing that they do.

It's just not as bad.

Exactly. Just like the rest of the world, capitalism takes over. There has to be a risk/reward equilibrium. If I train my entire life for football and I don't make it, I just wasted all my time and I have to try and do something else. If I want to be a teacher, I'm all but guaranteed a job, and unless I'm just terrible at it, I'm going to keep it forever. Job security^10. I know they deserve more money because of the importance of what they do, but schools pay teachers what they have to in order to staff the schools. If the pay was so unfair, then why do so many people still choose the profession?

Uh, yeah, no, that's not correct. The NFL gives all fines levied on players to charity.

Its a joke for people to get all on Moss's case. He was having fun and to get 10 grand fine is a joke as well. Romanowski spit in another player's face on national tv and only got fined $7500. The hypocrisy is a laugh.

Moss should have never been fined...maybe if he ACTUALLY mooned them I would understand but he didn't. I'm glad it doesn't bother him and hopefully he does something a little more vulgar next time like hes says. The way I see it, he might as well do something worthwhile for 10K.

Agreed. ESPECIALLY when you take into account that the Green Bay fans are notorious for mooning the opposing teams bus after a Packers win at Lambeau. Since when is turnabout no longer fair play?

Folks are looking for a reason to complain, and now Moss is it because TO is out. (By the way, the loss of TO makes the Vikes-Iggles game much more interesting. If TO was playing, I don't think the Purple People would have a chance. Reid will be fired if Philly loses.)

But what goes unmentioned in all of this is that I *believe* the City of Green Bay owns the teams. If there is a mooning tradition, is should be safe to say that at least one frequent mooner is a team owner. Can't owners be fined? If not, why not? (I know Cuban has paid a few bucks here and there.)

Where is the outrage when it comes to Cops or eating live muskrats? And it is OK to have beers ads (the Twins?) and Cialis during games, but not a fake mooning? A bet *all* of the fans at the Pacers-Pistons game in November were perfect angels. They really proved it when the players finally left the court that night.

As far as salaries go, do you think the players would be "as paid," if there was no income to pay them? How many bankrupt teams are there in the NFL? How many bankrupt owners are there? I don't think anyone is trying to break even when they can afford to pay millions.
