I'm an Orioles fan, I can feel your pain.

Heck, Tex said he'd love to play in Baltimore MANY times (he's from the area), yet our owner couldn't get the ball rolling. Awesome.

You didn't get a first baseman. You got a catcher. Salty is one of the best up and coming catchers in the league. He was stuck behind McCann in Atlanta though.

The Braves put Salty at first only because their first base situation was so dire and needed Salty's bat in the line-up.

Rangers also got the Braves best minor-league shortstop prospect and two pitching prospects.

This trade worked out for both sides IMHO. Salty and Andus look like they are going to end up being very good players but are log-jammed in Atlanta.

Article says catcher-first baseman. Our most urgent need is for a starting pitcher who can anchor down the rotation. We could have easily stolen one of ATL's starters for Mark.

Like I said, Salty is a true catcher who was put at first because of need. You don't want Salty at first base because he's honestly barely passable defensively.

You wouldn't have gotten any of ATL's starters because they barely have any right now. Atlanta's starting pitching rotation has been decimated because of injuries and they are in need of a third starting pitcher. All they really have right now is Smoltz and Hudson.

Then we should have traded for a starter on a different team, my whole point of the post. Hicks has run this team into the ground. He didn't even attend the Dallas Stars playoff games and instead, went to a meaningless Rangers game in which we ended up losing anyway. We have a decent catcher in Laird anyway...who gives a crap whose catching the ball when every guy we have throwing it sucks?

EDIT - you'll make the point that the catcher plays a part in how successful a pitcher is. We had gold glover Pudge Rodriguez for what, 10 years? Even when we were in the playoffs and constantly on the brink of being very good, our pitching still wasn't all that.

Hah. Yep. Hopefully if NY renegotiates his contract we'll be able to get out of some of that. Ridiculous. Despite my hate for Hicks, I still really enjoy going to games...the atmosphere of a baseball game is hard to beat.

Actually, I wasn't going to make that point at all.

I will say this, there isn't much in the way of starting pitching that is available right now. The Braves are probably just as much or more in need right now as they are in the playoff/division race but can't find anything. They were trying to trade Edgar Renteria for Chicago's Jon Garland but that deal died.

Salty is the games best catching prospect, but he's been playing first base because the Braves had no one else producing there (and McCann is our catcher). I had really high hopes that he'd just keep the position and the Braves would upgrade elsewhere, I'm not sure why they didn't think he can handle it since he looked fine there in limited play.

Harrison was actually considered to be the Braves top pitching prospect, which is why I was surprised when they called up Jo Jo Reyes before him. As a Braves fan I'm really against the trade.. pitching should have been a priority and not offense. I think the Braves are like 4th in the NL in offense, though its been a bit inconsistent. I'm also thinking it's unlikely the Braves re-sign Tex with Boras as his agent after 2008.

According to http://www.baseballamerica.com...s/features/263445.html the Rangers got 3 of the only 4 braves in the top 100 prospects for 2007 coming into the season, and the top 3 in the entire braves organization overall. I think JS (Braves GM) is desperate to win now since he's retiring in a couple years and decided to sell the farm to do it.

Only two teams showed interest in Texieira...and the Angels dropped out of the bidding. It was either take this package of awesome prospects or wait til next year to trade him when he has even less value as a free agent to be, or let him walk and get nothing in return. Seems to me like Daniels made a good move.

Salty = One of the Top Catching Prospects in the Game (blocked by McCann)
Elvis = One of the Top Shortstop Prospects in the Game, amazing defensively but needs offensive work. One top scout equated him to Derek Jeter (blocked by Renteria & Escobar)
Harrison = Top Pitching Prospect in the Braves Organization.

Looks like the Braves traded the farm, they better sign Tex to a long term deal.

The trade will look bad for the Braves if Teixeira doesn't stick around. They gave up quite a bit for a possible rental. The Braves are also close to getting Octavio Dotel which is big since their bullpen needs an extra arm with Gonzalez out, Soriano getting hit a bit now and Wickman blowing quite a bit of saves. A healthy Dotel would be huge for them. The Braves are going for broke!

Apparently there is word that they were talking to the White Sox regarding a Renteria/Garland trade and then the Braves would leave Yunel Escobar at shortstop but that died out.

Yeah Braves needed a left hander relief pitcher & Mahay can fill that role (I wouldve rather had Gagne or CJ Wilson)... Dotel would also be good to add. Smoltz, and Hudson are ace's. Chuck James has been pitching decent, Buddy Carlyle also has been pitching decently... the top prospect Jo Jo Reyes has been struggling but I think he can turn it around because he has good stuff.

The Braves also got a good left-handed relief pitcher in Mahay out of this deal. This was critical since the bullpen currently doesn't have a left-handed relief pitcher.

There are no starting pitchers available right now. The closest they came was Renteria for Garland but that deal fell through.

Salty - They've already got an All-Star Catcher.
Elvis - They've already got Renteria & Escobar

I don't see this as trading the farm as much as it is trading players who aren't going to be able to move up for existing for areas of need (First Base and Relief Pitching).

On the Braves Forums theres like an 80% negative / 20% positive split on this. Some see it as the Braves giving up three blue-chip prospects. Two of them are blocked yes but many including myself think it's still giving up too much... especially if the Braves don't resign Tex.

They're going for a playoff run this year since Andruw is likely not coming back and Chipper is getting older. They'll still have Teixeira through next season.

The new ownership group is supposedly going to be more flexible than Time-Warner so resigning Teixeira is a possibility. There's also rumors of the Braves trying to pick up Cameron or Hunter to replace Andruw in Center Field.

I would rather have Rowand, although next year bringing up Brandon Jones maybe a possibility... Looks like the Braves getting Dotel is pretty close too.

As a Met fan I love this trade. The Braves selling the future for a player that doesn't even address their greatest need. There is 0 chance of resigning Teixeira, Boras is his agent and that means the highest bidder, which could be the Mets since they'll be looking for a first basemen in 09.

I'm still not getting the "selling the future" bit when the reason the Braves are willing to trade Salty and Ardus is because they've already got young talented players at the same positions (McCann at catcher and Renteria and Escobar at shortstop). The future is already secure at shortstop and catcher barring a devastating injury which you can never predict anyways.

As a Braves fan I feel good about your arrogance towards this trade thinking the Mets somehow became stronger.

As for the Braves, I like the trade. Salty was a great prospect but it was evident the Braves were protecting him from harm by not playing him for a possible trade. Tex played baseball here in Atlanta at Georgia Tech and I don't see any reason why he wouldn't want to play here long-term.

Reports are also coming in about the Dotel trade but I don't know who is being offered up. Hopefully some low level prospects.

Also, we (being the Braves) need some starting pitching. JoJo Reyes isn't very good. However Chuck James and Buddy Carlysle have been pitching great their past few outings. If we somehow picked up a #3 starter and tidy up the bullpen life will be great for Braves fans. If not, I feel we may miss the playoffs for the 2nd time in a row.
